Male Breast Cancer - post treatment follow up

I'm a man. I was diagnosed with and treated for breast cancer in 2022. I was discharged from oncology care in 2023 with no further follow-up. I was told that there is no follow-up protocol for male patients. The best they 'offered' me was if I found another lump to go back to my GP.

I tried to get some support from my GP but they were not interested.

This all seems wrong and very unfair, but all my attempts to raise my concerns have fallen on deaf ears.

Is this the approach across the UK or am I particularly unlucky with regard to my local services?.

  • Hi Montebuffo, you are right this doesn't seem fair or right.  I have breast cancer and they do follow up for about five years.  On the Macmillan website under breast cancer there is a specific chat for blokes with breast cancer (that is what it is called ) BLOKES WITH BREAST CANCER - Macmillan Online Community  .  Also the Breast cancer Now website has specific information, support for men with breast cancer.  I hope that you can get support with this.

  • Hi there Montebuffo and thanks for the post

I am sorry to hear about your past diagnosis and treatment and the lack of support you seem to have had. This must have been a challenging few years for you navigating this time on your own.

Follow up after breast cancer in men can vary between patients as it will be based on the type, stage and treatment of the breast cancer and risk of it coming back. Some men will be seen for examination at regular intervals of 3-6 months for a few years after but for others it isn't unusual not to have scheduled appointments but rather open access to the clinic if they notice any changes or are worried.

I appreciate the latter can make people rather uneasy about not being monitored and to be concerned about something being missed.

I suggest speaking with a different GP at your surgery if you are struggling with all of this, they may be able to refer you back to the breast unit for an assessment which may put your mind at ease.

Alongside this you may find it helpful to reach out to Moobs a male breast cancer support charity or access the someone like me service offered by Breast Cancer Now ( think the website is down today due to maintenence) to get the peer support you need.

Do get back if you have more questions or feel free to give one of the nurses a call on 0808 800 4040, we're here weekdays 9-5.

    Best wishes

    Naomi
