PSA test at 58

Is it true that the PSA test for prostate cancer is not accurate please

  • Hi Johnny5678, and welcome to the forum, though it is true the PSA blood test is accurate only 76% of the time, these inaccuracies are much more likely as the PSA score gets lower, The PSA test is seen as a strong indicator of cancer and for follow up tests to begin, which will give a full picture of the cancer and how to treat it.

  • Hello and thanks for posting

A PSA level of 58 is higher than normal and it could be a sign of prostate cancer or another prostate issue such as an infection or an enlarged prostate.

But PSA levels alone don't give the full picture. Doctors will usually order further tests such as scans and biopsies to determine the exact cause of the elevated PSA.

We have further information about the PSA test on our website. Prostate Cancer UK has some additional information  on their site.

I hope you know more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk things over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,
