Prostate cancer

Hi my brother has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, he has a type called Tb2. He was diagnosed on the 4th Feb having been referred in July last year. They are talking about waiting a further 8 weeks until May, nearly a whole year after an urgent referral. Can someone help me understand why this is happening and how we may get some treatment? We don't seem to be able to get answers and there does not seem to be any rush at all.

  • Hello Chump and a warm welcome to the forum though i am sorry you have to be here and that your brother has cancer. I am not a nurse, though i have had prostate cancer for 2 years. Your brothers prostate cancer is T2b which means it's localised and is only in part of one half of the prostate, caught very early, slow growing and is unlikely to spread to lymph glands or anywhere else. Which when talking about prostate cancer is very good news. An urgent referral is standard when cancer is suspected, it does not mean treatment is urgent, Your brothers cancer stage T2b means another 8 weeks waiting will not make a difference. When you see the doctor in 8 weeks, as the cancer has been caught very early, your brother may even go on active surveillance, which means he will have regular tests to monitor the cancer until treatment is needed. and when treatment is needed it will be done to cure him, take care.

  • Hello and thanks for your post

I’m sorry to learn about your brother and can understand that this is a stressful time for you all.

I'm afraid we do not know why your brother hasn’t started his treatment yet as we aren't part of the NHS. The best thing for him to do is to get back in touch with his oncology team and discuss these concerns. He could leave a message with the nurse specialist (if he has one), and they will get back to him .

Hospitals will do their best to address any concerns patients have about their care. You may find it helpful to contact the hospital's Patient Advice and Liaison Service ( PALS) to discuss your concerns. They can investigate why your brother hasn't started his treatment yet

I hope you both know more soon. Give us a ring if you would like to talk anything over. The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Kind regards,

    Celene
