Vitamin D3 and chemotherapy

I have just had my annual blood tests etc and one of the abnormal results is Vitamin D3 deficiency, looked up results through NHS app. I haven't got an appointment yet with a GP but wondered if the chemo, for my Stage 3c Primary Peritoneum Cancer, could have had anything to do with this. I completed my chemo in November 2023 - Carbo and Paclitaxel.

I was diagnosed with osteopenia nearly 4 years ago and have been prescribed Supercal+Vit D which I have been taking since diagnosis. I also take Alendronic Acid once a week for my osteopenia. My DEXA scan should have been in September last year but I am still awaiting an appointment, my GP said last month he would chase it up. Since diagnosis I have been eating more ice creams, cream, yogurts etc as advised by GP,  which has made my cholesterol go up!

Should I advise my oncologist? Would the GP advise the oncologist?

  • Hello, and thanks for your post,

It is difficult without being involved in your care as to which route to go down but if you are due to see your oncologist for a follow up appointment I would mention your vitamin D deficiency to them.

If your GP is chasing up your DEXA scan appointment I would ask him whether he has had any joy in chasing up your appointment. I would ask his advice about your vitamin D deficiency. I can't say whether it could be caused by your recent chemotherapy but it may have a bearing.

    I hope this helps.
