Breast cancer/ ProSigna results

Hi, just to let you know, I had my hospital appointment today with the consultant.

When they removed my lump, they found s ome ore cancerous cells, however this has been removed and I've got clear margins on my breat and lymph nodes.

I'm definitely having hormone tablets for 10 years and Radiotherapy. However, some patients benefit from chemotherapy and some patients don't. I'm one of those patients where they are unsure. So now I have to wait another 3-4 weeks for another appointment to see the Oncologist who will tell me what percentage the chemotherapy will be beneficial for me. They will also confirm how long I need Radiotherapy for.
If the percentage of chemotherapy being beneficial is 2% for example, I need to decide if I want it. Some patients decide they don't because it's going through all that pain for 2% whereas some patients say 2% is 2%. The test is called a pro signa test
So It's a waiting game to find out what percentage it is for me then I need to make decision. If I do end up having chemo, it be for 6 months  ‍.

I am also going to be referred for the genes testing to see if it hereditary x

Has anyone had the experience where they needed the prosigna test because it's was not clear if chemotherapy was required?

  • Hello Anjaya and thanks for posting

I am sorry to hear you were found to have breast cancer but it is good to hear they have been removed with clear margins and no lymph nodes.

Hopefully others who have been through similar will pop on to share their stories with you about making treatment decisions. As I am sure you are aware making a decision about having further treatment can be difficult to make and what is right for one person won't be the same for someone else.

We have more information about prosigna and other tumour profiling tests that is probably helpful for you to read. As you will see any patient meeting the NICE criteria for these tests are usually offered it to determine their risk and percentage benefit for chemotherapy. These patients will be assessed as intermediate risk with a oestrogen positive, her2 negative breast cancer that hasn't spread to the lymph nodes. The test looks at how fast growing and active the breast cancer cells were to assess the likelihood of the cancer coming back in the future.

At the end of the day only you can decide what is best for you moving forward once given all the information, which you will receive once the results from the prosigna test are back.

    I hope this helps.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Naomi
