Worried about my father

My father was undergoing radiotherapy for prostate cancer, developed a cough lumps and in a lot of pain. He won’t allow us to attended appointments and hardly speaks about how his feeling.
All he will say is don’t worry I’m just tired! Today the hospital rang and have stopped his radiotherapy and called him in today for immediate testing.
again we don’t know y as he won’t say. Should we be worried that this may be the start of the end and prepare to make him comfortable?

  • Hello and thank you for your post,

I am sorry to hear about your father's prostate cancer diagnosis, and I appreciate that you want to understand more about his situation.

I realise that your father not sharing what is happening causes worry. It is possible that he may think that talking about his situation is going to cause you more worry than not knowing. So do tell him that not knowing is more worrying. It could also mean that he finds it difficult and can't talk about it.

I am afraid that we cannot throw anymore light on this for you. In the meantime try not to resist asking too many questions. And remember that it is likely that as time passes that he will share with you what is happening to him.  Keep in contact with him as this will help you to see what is happening and what help he may need.

We have information on our website about living with prostate cancer, it includes information on the psychological impact it can have and also about the support people can get. This might be helpful for you to read, you can see it here.

Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Take care,

    Caroline
