Long wait to be seen.

I saw my GP 2 weeks ago for a breast lump. Referred UCS to clinic. Phoned appointments today as haven’t heard anything. They are unable to give me a time frame for when I will be seen. Just said they are very busy and I would be out on a waiting list. I asked if we were talking a few weeks or longer and they were unable to say how long and that they were not guaranteeing any waiting times for the clinic. I know I am being inpatient but I’m also worried and stressed. Even if I knew it would be 6-8 weeks until I was being seen I would at least have a date to work towards and not just worry that it could be months before I’m seen. Realistically how long should I wait before I speak to my GP again about waiting times? I thought if I hadn’t heard by the end of august that would be long enough to phone and ask again? Or does that seem too pushy. Even if it is something sinister a few weeks won’t make any difference but I’m not sleeping. I’ve already lost weight as I’m not eating and I’m trying to appear unconcerned around my partner

  • Hello and thanks for posting

The majority of people who are referred urgently to the breast clinic pre pandemic times were usually seen within 2 weeks. But now people are having to wait several weeks as there are huge pressures and staff shortages within the NHS and clinics are trying to deal with the backlog.

But breast clinics are trying to see patients as quickly as possible. I appreciate waiting any length of time when you are worried is very stressful.

You could try and contact the breast clinic and ask if you could go on a cancellation list and they may contact you if a slot suddenly becomes available at short notice. But unfortunately this is not guaranteed.

You could also contact your GP if you haven't heard anything in the next 2 or 3 weeks to see if they can offer any advice.

I hope everything turns out to be okay .Please get back to us if you need any more information or support.  You may find it helpful to talk things through with one of the nurses on our helpline.  The number to call is Freephone 0808 800 4040 and the lines are open from 9am till 5pm Monday to Friday.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you for replying. I’m trying to have my sensible head on and put it to the back of my mind. I’m trying to convince myself it’s just a cyst or fatty lump. I’ll give it until kids go back to school and if I haven’t heard anything by then I’ll speak to my GP and see what she says. The unfortunate thing is GPs are saying it’s a 2 week referral to appointment waiting time and that’s not the case. It’s just a worry and difficult to carry on as normal and not dwell on it x
