Neck ultrasound large lymph node

Hi, I just had a neck ultrasound due to painful glands on the side of my neck. I got a call off my GP within 2 days saying that a large node had been found and they want to repeat the scan in 10 weeks from now. Due to how quickly they contacted me I'm very worried, despite the 10 week part sounding less worrying. Anyone been through anything similar? I'm lost as to why they want to wait so long to repeat a scan if they think it could be something serious.

  • From previous experience personally, and with family - if they suspect cancer it's usually a two-week turnaround time. That was my experience with a breast lump, and was the time a GP suggested if I needed a gastro referral for cancer concerns. I'd take the 10 week time as being reassuring, sometimes they want to repeat a scan because there may have been movement which altered the result e.g. swallowing, they suspect it's caused by a temporary illness etc. If they were concerned you'd be seen sooner. Sending hugs xx

  • Thanks a lot for the quick response, your comments have definitely reassured me a lot. I agree if they suspected anything serious it would be on the 2 week referral. I think I was more bothered by how quickly the GP called me (2 days after the scan) but the ultrasound technician said 1-2 week for the results! I'll try my best to stay calm
