HPV and Low-grade dyskaryosis

Hi Guys

I have just received a letter confirming I have HPV and Low-grade dyskaryosis. I am going for a colposcopy. I was just wondering how the procedure was etc...

I am also worried sick, I have lower abdominal pain and I think a UTI, not diagnosed. I had excruciating pain a few weeks ago after sex, but I just had put that down to having the coil fitted a couple of months back.

But you google these things and it's terrifying, I know you shouldn't google but it's natural!!!

Any words of wisdom or advice would be much appreciated

  • Hi connie

What do you mean by the best option to look at? Sorry, I didn’t know what you meant by that. Are you speaking about the colposcopy? x

  • Oh sorry hun I meant the colposcopy, sorry it's my predictive text on here lol

  • Ah-no worries! Absolutely the colposcopy is the best thing to do next. They can examine the cervix much more closely, and put a liquid on which will identify any areas of abnormal cells. They can see then how abnormal the cells are, and low grade suggests they are only slightly abnormal, so that’s why there is no urgency to do the colposcopy immediately. Sometimes the cells can regress and get better on their own, but sometimes some treatment is needed to remove them. This is very common, and a simple procedure in the clinic if it’s required. So try not to stress about it! x

  • Okay my lovely thank you for that I read in the forums that some have taken painkillers before the procedure so I'll be taken that.

  • The colposcopy shouldn’t be painful, but some people find it useful to take a couple of painkillers in advance in case biopsies are taken or any treatment is carried out at the time. I didn’t take any painkillers in advance of my examination as I didn’t even think, but I was absolutely fine and didn’t find anything painful. x

  • Me too I overthink every situation. Im always at the gym so when I get any aches or pains always put it down to that. At least you working alot might help time to pass to your appointment. Yeah take the painkillers it shouldn't hurt anyway but why chance it hurting if you don't have to is how I looked at it. I dont think you have anything to worry about with how far away your appointment is they don't think its anything serious or you would be going for your appointment within days, so hopefully your colposcopy will put your mind at ease x

  • I have been okay today, having a lazy Sunday before I start my annual leave tomorrow. Thanks for the reassurance my lovely x

  • Hello

i have received my results today of my smear and it came back I am hpv positive and have low grade dyskaryosis, I have to go for a coloscopy I haven't got my date yet as they are sending me a letter but I am the most anxious person ever and am freaking out, my last smear 3 years ago came back all normal so I am so scared and thinking the worst I think it's normal but reading these messages have helped me massively! My letter just said in almost all cases it's not cancerous or something like that and after reading this forum it has made me feel better and that it is just mild changes which can take years to develop into cancer cells it's just a scary and worrying letter to receive!

I hope your ok though and good luck for you appointment x

  • Hi everyone,

I went for my first smear test at the end of last yeah and results have come back with HPV and Low-grade dyskaryosis. I'll need to go for a colonoscopy.

I never commented on a forum before but I just want to say that reading through this has somewhat put my mind at ease, but let's face it ladies - do we ever relax until we really know?

I've gone straight to google to look it all up and I have to admit, it's all a bit overwhelming. My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago, so the C word scares me!

This might be a bit of a stupid question... But what does this mean for my partner?

Feeling a bit numb right now!

  • Hi MissHannah

It’s a colposcopy you’ll be having, not a colonoscopy, so I’m not sure if that was a typo, but hope you haven’t been looking up colonoscopy which is something very different.

Cell changes are caused by the HPV virus, but low grade changes are not really a cause for concern and are not cancer. Your results are extremely common, though it’s never nice to have any sort of abnormal result.

The colposcopy will allow a closer look at your cervix and for any areas of abnormal cells to be identified and removed if necessary. It’s likely that your partner will carry the HPV virus too but there is no test for men, and is not likely to cause any issues at all. It doesn’t mean you need to stop having sex or need to wear a condom. I would be very wary of google, which will likely produce all sorts of worst case scenarios for everything and will be unhelpful.
