Breast biopsy

Good evening.

approx six weeks ago I was referred to the breast clinic by my GP after having pain in my left breast, this is not constant pain, it is intermittent through out every day. The appointment was a none emergency. A week prior to the referral I had had a lot of blood tests too, one of my white blood cells was low (not investigated) and my iron was very low, have started medication for this. For about a year I have had a tingling sensation in my back on left side of my shoulder blade and blunt pain, Iv had a chest x ray nothing has shown up. Iv not felt very well for months. Anyways I attended the breast clinic yesterday, (no other symptoms, no lumps apart from the intermittent pain in my left breast) I never expected anything to be wrong. The doctor examined both breasts then sent me for a mammogram and an ultrasound, they then told me that the mammogram and ultrasound sound had picked something up and they gave me a local anaesthetic and a core biopsy there and then, I get my results in two weeks time. I was in that much shock that Iv come away not knowing what they have found, all I remember them saying is something about abnormal tissue. Had anyone had a similar situation? I'm 38.

thank you

  • Hi K.s82 and welcome to Cancer Chat.

I'm sorry that something was found during your breast clinic appointment but I and the rest of the community will have our fingers crossed the results come back with good news in two weeks time.

I know it will be a tough wait but hopefully some of our members can make this time slightly more bearable when they pop with their support and advice. I hope the tips and advice given in this article on how to cope with waiting for news will help you through the next 14 days as well.

Do let us know what happens K.s82 and remember we're here for you whatever the outcome.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi @K.s82

Sorry to hear that you are waiting on results, that I have found is the worse time, the not knowing and worrying and watching the post or waiting for that phonecall.

I was 44 when I had my first mammogram and ultrasound, I went in for a cyst, which they did drain at the time and during the ultrasound they found something else which they took a biopsy of. It all felt like a whirlwind, but with the breast clinic it is great that you can have all these tests and procedures done there and then and not waiting for seperate appointments dragging out the worry.

My biopsy at that time came back as a fibroadema, which they left alone and although I get a nagging pain with it occassionally, there was no change to it when I was having a mammogram 2 years later.

When we are faced with a potential scary diagnoses we do look back over how we have been feeling and pains and signs we may have ignored and put down to nothing much and all of a sudden they take on a sinister feeling of what if I missed something, what if I had gone in sooner.

I really hope you are not waiting long for your results and I hope it is good news for you, I hope you come back and let us know how you go.

    Take Care

  • Thankyou very much for your reply.

I am very lucky that I am very occupied with long shifts I work so I am not constantly thinking about it, just the odd thought now and again.

I am still in a bit of a whirlwind sleuth it all at the moment, hoping on good news.

    Once again, Thankyou
