Lump and inverted nipple

Hello

I have had an inverted nipple for a few months now, but didn't get it checked because around the same time I was taken into hospital unable to breathe. I am waiting for a scan because it was discovered I have an enlarged heart. I have also been checked for a thyroid problem so the inverted nipple has become secondary, which I know was silly.  Anyway, I had some blood tests last Friday,  and mentioned it to the nurse who had a quick look, then made me an appointment to have it checked on Monday. I had it checked and the doctor found a lump or possibly more. I was referred to the breast clinic, my appointment is a week on Monday, 15th November. The appointment date arrived by letter on Tuesday, the day after I was referred. Is this worrying that things are moving so quickly? The letter said it will take up to 4 hours for the appointment. Will I be told the results straight away? Will I be able to take my husband with me? We literally go everywhere together and I will need him with me.  I have other issues,  I am a wheelchair user and take morphine and other drugs for pain relief in my spine.

I have read that cancer can spread to the lymph nodes under the arm,  but I have had all my glands/lymph nodes removed from under both arms over 16 operations a few years ago. Will cancer spread somewhere else instead? I know I'm jumping ahead thinking the worst, but I really am concerned.

Thank you for reading

  • Hello Joanne,

This is obviously an anxious time for you as you are waiting to be seen at the breast clinic. I thought I would share with you detailed information on what to expect from your breast clinic appointment. You will find that it will answer a lot of the questions you may be asking yourself at the moment. For example, it mentions there that "some test results may be available later that day, but if you have a core biopsy this will take longer. In some areas, you may be asked to make another appointment to finish your tests or to get your results. If this happens, you may have to wait about a week for your test results."

With regards to taking your husband with you, it is possible that measures to stop the spread of coronavirus may still be in place and would mean that you can't take someone with you at your appointment. If I were you, I would ring the breast clinic you are going to just to check this with them and see whether you could bring your husband. Do mention that it would help you feel less anxious but it is possible that because of coronavirus they may not be able to allow it. Perhaps because you are a wheelchair user, they may be able to let you come with your husband, if you need help for example with the wheelchair so it's definitely worth getting in touch with them, explaining your situation in detail and seeing whether they would allow it.

I am not sure regarding your lymph nodes question but I think for now it's best not to jump ahead thinking the worst as it may not be anything to worry about and there are so many things it could be other than cancer so try not think about this at the moment until you have a definite diagnosis. If this question is making you worry a lot, you could ask them at the breast clinic and explain your situation that you have had all your lymph nodes removed but I think it's best to wait first and see what the results show.

I am keeping everything crossed for you that it all turns out to be fine for you!

Best of luck with your breast clinic appointment,
