Fast growing Breast Cancer

had a breast cancer scare 5 years ago. I had all the tests; mammograms, scans & lots of biopsies on my left breast. At the time I was told it was just cysts & discharged. 2 years later I had a negative mammogram.

My next routine mammogram is due next month. However I felt a hard area in my left breast and have just come home from the breast clinic.

I have been advised that I probably have breast cancer as the mammogram & scan have shown a suspicious mass of about 5cm. I'm now waiting for biopsy results (they also took a sample from a lymph node under my armpit )

I'm worried sick.

Has anyone else experienced such a fast growing tumor. How come it didn't show up on my last mammograms? I've never missed one.

  • Hi Shona, I thought I'd read that was the case, lump or breast tissue or unsure? What day is your apt? I wasn't allowed anyone to my first clinic apt, but for the results (changes in covid withstanding) you should be able to. Of course hopefully they will be able to confirm it's benign on the day, but that's not always possible even if it is, which mostly they are.  I hope this site is helping you, but do ask if there's something you are thinking about, we'll all try to help. Take care Mickey x

  • Hello

it's in my left breast, is quite large under my nipple but it's movable feels around 5cm oval ish I think, doesn't hurt at all.

I am very small chested only an A cup!!! I also have an inherited condition called neurofibromas type one which is basically benign tuners in nevrve endings but I don't have any as big as this one... there is also a slightly higher change of breast cancer with this condition..

    my appointment is next Wednesday.

what stage stage are you at ?

  • Good luck for your appointment on Wednesday. X

a lot of the appointments seems to be on Wednesdays for some reason...

  • Hi Shona, My lump was not as large as yours, but not really moveable. They do say if it's moveable it's a positive sign, however, as you know until it's been screened and examined it's hard to say. It's good you have the appointment booked in now, but I know a week can feel like an eternity. Sorry to hear about your inherited condition and that it raises your risk. Are you managing with the wait ok?

I got my initial cancer diagnosis September for the lump that's invasive, but fortunately one of the least aggressive, but they found two other areas of concern on my mammogram at my first breast clinic apt in the same breast (right) one microcalcifications and the other, I'm still not really sure. I had to have further biopsies under mammogram and only just had it confirmed that they've turned out to be different grades of DCIS. I have another clinic apt tomorrow and hope to get a provisional treatment plan then (as I've been told things can change when they conduct surgery), but hopefully not. I have been told different things by different consultants though and so it's all a bit mind boggling and I just want to walk out tomorrow with a clear plan - at least about surgery. X

  • Can't stop thinking about it and getting cross with the kids. Obviously they have no idea.

And I keep googling things !! And thinking I am finding more lumps under my arm but May be imagining it.

hope it's a bit more positive tomorrow xx

  • It's usual for it to play on your mind - believe me it consumes me a lot. It's hard to remain calm when your emotions are all over the place. Kids pick up on stuff like that and so I hope you have some support with them at this 'waiting stage'. I know everyone says it, but try to avoid googling, it just spirals your mind and is often out of date or not true.  Reality is, you won't know anything until at least your apt next Wed, so please be kind to yourself and if posting how out of control you feel helps, do that. We understand and you'll be supported x

Thanks Shona, me too, I'm putting all my eggs on this basket hatching a plan tomorrow x

  • Thank you for your supportive words. X

  • Hi lily

i was diagnosed with invasive ducal carcinoma in dec 2020. My tumour was approx 10cm. My treatment plan was 8 cycles of chemo followed by surgery. Because the chemo didn't remove all the tumour (but surgery did as far as they could see) I was started on 8 cycles of an oral chemo tablet called capecitabine (Xyloda is the other name for it). Is this the drug your doctor was talking about. I have just finished my 4th cycle so thankfully half way through.
hopefully your treatment plan is started and that you are doing well

    Best wishes
