Thyroid lump

Hi. I've noticed a lump to the left side of my thyroid for about the last month. I went to my GP straight away and I have an appointment with the ENT consultant on 15th October,  but I'm terrified.

I have no idea what it might be . It has now spread so that it looks like a "snake" from my ear, down to my collarbone and across to my thyroid and over to the other side of my neck.  Any ideas? It's keeping me awake with worry...

I'll be 55 years old next week and I'm getting married for the first time in April next year. I'm so scared.  xx

  • Hi Philippa0810,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I can imagine this must be unsettling and I know the uncertainty and waiting for information is never easy.

For now try to focus on the fact you have an appointment with the specialist coming up, where you'll hopefully find out more (or soon after that at least). In the meantime there's not much that can be done, so try to keep your mind off things by keeping busy. I know this is sometimes easier said than done.

I hope that the appointment comes around quickly and that you get the answers you need soon.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • To give some reassurance, firstly, thyroid nodules are common. Most are benign. And secondly, even in the worst case scenario where it is cancer (and only about 5%- 10% of nodules are), the most common forms of thyroid cancer are rarely life-threatening and are rarely treated with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Normally, they just remove your thyroid. Obviously, nobody would choose any form of cancer but it's said that if you had to have cancer, but could choose which type, thyroid cancer would be the one to choose. There is a serious form, but that is very rare and those who are affected tend to be older.
