Breast Lump Worry

New here & very worried

A week ago I got the usual PMS at the start of my month cycle.  Normally both breasts get very tender.  However one became extremely painful & I noticed it was swollen & felt a lump.

The on call doctor looked very worried & started me on antibiotics & sent me to A & E.  I had a temperture of 37.7/38.  Bloods came back showing normal for infection, though slightly raised.

My own GP was also worried & has refered me to the Breast clinic.

Day 6 of antibiotics & the temperature is back to normal & the pain is gone.  Lump still the same but tender.  I don't think it was there a month or two ago but can't be certain.

The GP is worried because it feels firm. It is about 4 to 5cm, seems smooth but firm.  It is somewhat moveable.  I have very small breasts. There is nothing noticeable on the outside of my breast. I am almost 45 years old.

Google is terrifying me.  The wait for the breast clinic is awful.

I am kids with special needs so am terrified for them.

  • Hello Blondie2007,

Poor you, it sounds like you are having a truly stressful time and the wait can feel never ending. I know it's really hard but stay well away from Dr Google as it will only make you worry even more and won't give you any answers.

There is useful information on this page on what to expect from your breast clinic appointment and I hope that you will hear from some of our members who have been through this before and that they will share their experience with you. Try not to anticipate what it might be as there are so many benign reasons for breast lumps too but it's important to get this properly investigated.

I am keeping everything crossed for you that your appointment goes well and it all turns out to be fine.

    Best wishes,

  • Thank you.  When nobody replied I was fearing the worst.  I am 8 days now on antibiotics & yesterday & today the lump feels different, a little smaller I think.  I'm hoping that might be a good sign?

I have an appintment with the Breast Clinic on Tuesday & am trying not to panic

  • I hope all goes well on Tuesday - not long to wait now! You will be in expert hands and try and feel reassured by the fact that many breast lumps that are referred to the breast clinic turn out not to be cancer but it's good to have everything properly investigated. It's good that the lump feels a little smaller I hope the antibiotics are working! Do mention all this to them at the breast clinic on Tuesday so they have all the information.

  • Thank you.

I am slightly worried that if I mention this to the breast clinic that they will not do all the tests & I will still be left wondering.

I am so grateful for this forum

  • I think you will be in expert hands and they will know what tests need to be done so don't worry too much about this. You could just mention that the lump is still there and the antibiotics haven't made a huge difference. In any case, I am sure they will know exactly what to do so you'll be well looked after!

    Best of luck for Tuesday!

  • So I was at the breast clinic today & the nurse who seen me first & examined me said she thoughy from my history, we were dealing with a cyst & I would have a mammogram booked for a few weeks time.

Until the consultant came in & felt the lump & told me he was concerned as it was very firm & not normal.  Next thing I am heading down for a Mammogram, ultrasound & biopsy.

The mammogran showed both breasts full of cysts & one pretty big one.  I had it drained there & then & I am very grateful that I am in the clear.

The Best of luck to all you ladies still waiting & I hope my update brings some hope that sometimes even firm lumps turn out ok.
