Exercise after 1st breast clinic trip

Hi everyone

I've just been referred to the breast clinic by my GP and understand it's a 2-3 week wait to be seen. I'm trying not to worry (obviously difficult) but my question is this... Depending on how many tests I have at the clinic on the day, how soon afterwards should I be ok to run? Anyone who has been through this, how sore were you afterwards? Very approx do you think I'll be ok to run again in a matter of hours, days, or weeks?!

I ask as I am due to run the London Marathon in 3 weeks...

Thanks!

  • Hello,

firstly good luck for the London marathon!

I would say if your going to have a biopsy on the day of your breast clinic you may be a bit sore to be jogging up and down ( even with a good bra)  I had several core biopsies done and was pretty tender for a good week after...I also expect it depends on how voluptuous you are?

If it's just the mammogram and ultrasound you'll be as right as nine pence!

    Good luck with everything x

    Hi Egganor,

A very warm welcome to our forum.

I too have had a number of tests and biopsies. After an ultrasound, I have had no bother at all. After a mammogram, my breast could feel a bit squashed for a few days. After a biopsy, my breast was tender for a couple of months, but I don’t think that any of these would have stopped me from running.

I hope that this helps and send my best wishes for the marathon.

Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Marlyn and Jolamine

Thank you both so much for taking the time to reply. This is really helpful to hear. I am certainly not what you would call voluptuous so that's a bonus! I asked the GP this question but she didn't really know. If I get seen in the few days leading up to the marathon (which is what I'm expecting) and they suggest a biopsy then I might see if it's possible to delay that until after it then. Although I may just be so desperate for a diagnosis, I don't know... I'll see. But it's reassuring to hear that mammograms aren't too bad.

Thanks again both and I'll report back once I'm seen. I feel strangely calm about it all now, despite it being pretty scary and me having breast cancer in the family etc, I think having the marathon to focus on is just the distraction I need :)

    Thanks again.

    Hi Egganor,

I forgot to mention that if you are under 40 mammograms are not often used, as the breast is often too dense to show up clearly on a mammogram. You will also find that not all breast lumps are cancerous. Only 1 in 8 who attend the breast clinic get a cancer diagnosis. Others have benign cysts or fibroadenoma.

It's just as well that you have the marathon to focus on, as this is always a worrying time. I sincerely hope that it all goes well for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Thanks Jolamine

I didn't know that, this is all new to me! I'm 41 so I guess a mammogram will be ok. I've seen the statistics and 80-90% sound pretty good odds to me so that's what I'm reassuring myself with. I'm determined to get through the next few weeks without letting my mind race off into dark places. Life is really busy right now which I think definitely helps.

Thanks again for the advice and comforting words xx

  • Hi, just wanted to post an update.

I was lucky enough to get a cancellation appointment at the breast clinic last Saturday so not a long wait at all. The mammogram and ultrasound both showed nothing but consultant still wanted to do a biopsy just to be sure, but was reassuring it is probably not cancer.

With regards to exercise, I wasn't at all sore afterwards and was running the next day without any issues. Hooray!

I get my biopsy result Monday, it's hard not to be nervous about this but I'm assuming it'll be good news

    Hi Egganor,

Thank you for the update. I am delighted to hear that you managed to get a cancellation so soon and that you were able to exercise afterwards without any problems. It is great to hear that nothing was found on mammogrram or ultrasound, but just as well that a biopsy was carried out for your own peace of mind.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for good news on Monday!

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
