Breast Changes

Hi everyone,

About 7 years ago I was referred to the breast Inc due to an area of thickening in my right breast. They examined it and said it was just that, fatty tissue.

For theast 9 months, at least, my hand has been drawn to that area and I can feel the thickening and I think a small lump. I have also had intermittent pain in my right shoulder and into my right arm.

Due to so much going on this year I have only just got the courage to make an appointment with my GP - I go tomorrow.

I'm so scared and feel so alone. My husband is currently in the Gulf with the Royal Navy and I've convinced myself it will be breast cancer and I have no idea how I would cope.

I know this waiting part is the worse and I'm just reaching out for some moral support and courage.

  • Hi

I've just stumbled across your post as I'm actually going for my breast clinic appointment in the morning and was doing some last minute reading about what to expect..

Im in a similar situation, referred 3 years ago with a diagnosis of a change in the tissue, becoming thicker and ropier they said, hormones maybe (I'm 43 now) ...but in the last 3 months I just kept checking this one area which just seemed different from the other breast..no lump but just a definate change. GP agreed I wasn't imagining it and referred me, that was 2 weeks ago and now I'm just hoping I actually sleep tonight and that everything ok!

Sorry that's no help, but sometimes it's nice to know someone in a similar situation

    Best wishes

    Hi Beth,

These past couple of years have been strange times and, as a result, many have delayed getting problems like this checked out. You are doing the right thing, even though it is scary. Even if your small lump is cancerous it is not the end of the world. If it is small, chances are that you have caught it early.  This must be particularly difficult for you when your husband is serving away from home. I have had 2 bouts of breast cancer in the past 12 years and, had already lost my mum to breast cancer before I was diagnosed.

I felt equally as terrified as you, but am pleased to say that since then I have seen my children leave school, go to university, graduate, find gainful employment, marry and give me two wonderful grandchildren. I am fortunate too in that I still live a fulfilled and busy life. Breast cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer and, advances are being made all of the time with treatment. Besides, this might not even be breast cancer. Only 1 person in every 8 referred to the breast clinic will receive a cancer diagnosis. It is also worth remembering that not all lumps are cancerous. Many are benign cysts or fibroadenoma..

I am keeping my fingers crossed for you and, hope that it all goes well tomorrow. Please keep in touch and let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx
