Teen Breast Cancer

My Daughter is 14 years old and has found a large lump on one of her breasts. The lump is hard, very painful, and the skin is red and hot. I have read all the advise and understand that it is very rare for teens to have breast cancer, but it is possible. I also understand about all the other, most likely, causes but when you read the symptoms of BC it is her to a tee.

i will of course get her to a doctor as soon as possible but it is BHol weekend and I know it will be days and days before they can offer me an appt for her - which is so cruel as she is going out of her mind with worry.

So in the meantime I am asking if anyone has experienced teen BC and if so would you share you experience please. I am so humbled by how brave you all are. Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

  • Hi, not a teen breast cancer survivor but am young (23) and have found a lump so thought I'd reply. She should absolutely be given a referral to a breast clinic despite her age, odds are that she'll be absolutely fine but it's the right thing to check. they should do a physical examination and an ultrasound (too young for a mammogram), and if needed, a biopsy. I also found my lump on a weekend, I phoned 111 and they got a GP to call me back on an out of hours service and gave me a 2 week referral so that could be an option for you. Another option (if you have the financial means or health insurance that covers it) is to get a private appointment which I imagine would be quicker - not an option for me or many but worth knowing about.

I understand how nerve wracking the whole thing is and waiting 2 weeks honestly is the worst part. Try and reassure yourselves by knowing that even if it is the absolute worst case scenario, 2 weeks is very very unlikely  to make any difference in the cancer's spread. I finally have my appointment tomorrow so fingers crossed all is okay.

Thinking of you and your daughter x

  • Hi there ...

If I were you I'd tell Dr how upset and worried she is ... don't be fobbed off, as some Drs just say she's too young ... which in her favour the odds are really good for her ... though like you say not impossible... but try to keep her calm .. if you look in control it will help her ... even at older ages 8.5 out of ten lumps are benign...  my first four call backs for lumps were all clear...  one was hard one softer .. one moved , one didn't .. one felt like a flat pebble all of those were o.k ..it may be red and feeling hot if you both keep feeling it ... and don't worry bout a few days ... honestly even a few weeks waiting for refural won't make much difference ... we all had a two week wait .. as far as I know ...

So keep busy ... and good luck to maisy... hope your appointment goes well ... fingers crossed for you both ... Chrissie x

  • Thank you Chrissie, really helpful to know what to expect about timings. Thank you for your valuable advice. x
