I can't comment on what the consultant is now thinking the lump may be, but I do know that most Plastic Surgeons are as knowledgeable about skin cancers as dermatologists are because they are the ones that are removing dodgy lumps & bumps every day. My former dermatologist (she now only does research work) was amazing - I was under her, on & off, for 14 years. However, after my Stage 3 melanoma diagnosis 12 years ago I was given the option to choose between the oncologist, dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon for my 10 years of regular check ups. My dermatologist was so good that her clinics always over ran by a couple of hours so I chose my Plastic Surgeon. He had literally saved my life by extending my groin lymph node dissection into my pelvis on a hunch - he was right because melanoma was in a pelvic node that hadn't shown up on the CT scan due to it being so small. Since then he has always given me a full skin check and removed any moles he thought looked dodgy - thankfully they've all been benign. 

If this second bump is also to be excised and either of them turn out to be skin cancer, you can always ask to be put under the care of the Dermatology Clinic if it makes you feel more confident about your care. They may suggest this anyway if they decide you need a period of monitoring.
