Skin bump on shoulder and forehead

Hello

I am looking for advise please as I am going frantic searching Google( I know I should not as its fuelling my anxiety).

Three weeks ago I was referred to the hospital after an appointment with my GP.  I had a couplde of what I thought were new moles but turned out to be seborric keratosis.  Whilst I was there I asked him to check out another skin lesion/bump I had on my shoulder. It was not pigmented but I had scratched it recently and it bleed alot.  Since this time it has healed over and does not bleed much when scratced but is still there.  No pigmnet colour just skin colour.

Today I went to have it excised, it was the same registrar plastic surgeon I saw in the consult and now he changed his option and thinks this is suspicous and mentioned a few BCC, Bowens Disease and SCC.

He then looked at a small bump I had on my forehead and said that looked supicous, similar very small in size and again flesh coloured.

I am now so anxious as I really could not understand him.  I have not seen a dermatologist and wondered if I should have if these are more knowledgeable.

I have MS and since my duagnosis suffere from health anxiety.  GP has now prescrived Prozac as am I so anxiou

  • Hi,

I can't comment on what the consultant is now thinking the lump may be, but I do know that most Plastic Surgeons are as knowledgeable about skin cancers as dermatologists are because they are the ones that are removing dodgy lumps & bumps every day. My former dermatologist (she now only does research work) was amazing - I was under her, on & off, for 14 years. However, after my Stage 3 melanoma diagnosis 12 years ago I was given the option to choose between the oncologist, dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon for my 10 years of regular check ups. My dermatologist was so good that her clinics always over ran by a couple of hours so I chose my Plastic Surgeon. He had literally saved my life by extending my groin lymph node dissection into my pelvis on a hunch - he was right because melanoma was in a pelvic node that hadn't shown up on the CT scan due to it being so small. Since then he has always given me a full skin check and removed any moles he thought looked dodgy - thankfully they've all been benign.

If this second bump is also to be excised and either of them turn out to be skin cancer, you can always ask to be put under the care of the Dermatology Clinic if it makes you feel more confident about your care. They may suggest this anyway if they decide you need a period of monitoring.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie

  • Hi Angie

Thanks for the reply.  I am just so anxious and trying to second guess what the plastic surgeon was thinking.  He came up with so many different possibilites.  if it is BCC or SCC are they curable?  I have only read information on google and not sure how reliable it it.  If it is BCC will they suggest a period of monitoring or do I just get a letter in the post advising what is it?  I have to wait 4 - 6 weeks for the results and they said if I have not heard anything then ring the secretary or contact my GP as they will send the results to them also.  i have not had the opprotunity for anyone to explain it to me.

    Thanks.

    Helen
