Ct scan for ovarian cysts

Hi.

I am being sent for a ct scan for 2 ovarian cysts that were found on my left ovary. One of these cysts was found via ultrasound in September but was thought to have been a normal cyst that occurs as part of menstrual cycle. It has since doubled in size and a second cyst has grown next to it. The sonographer who scanned them in June via ultrasound thought it was one large chocolate cyst, with a solid calcified element and septation. This was a private scan.

I had CA 125 result come back slightly raised at 80,  the doctor found this concerning so I was put on the 2 week pathway. The consultant in hospital rescanned the cysts and said it was 2 dermoid cysts with a solid element in one. He was confident they were not malignant and the next step would be surgery in a few weeks.

However,I have since been referred for a ct scan but no one will tell me why. I am also concerned that they have been diagnosed as 2 different types of cysts. Has anyone had any experience with a ct scan for benign cysts? All information online seems to suggest it is used as a tool for staging ovarian cancer only.

For some context,  I have near constant pain with them, and my cycles have become erratic with lots of bleeding. I am 29.

Thanks

  • Hell I am having a ct scan for a cyst on my ovary tomorrow.

Bot much info as to why just they don't know what it is, how was yours?

    Thanks

  • Hi Shauna

Good luck with your scan. Mine was fine, the most uncomfortable part was having some bloodwork done beforehand (apparently this is to check kidney function). The dye solution you drink isnt the nicest but the ultrasound scan they did was much more uncomfortable. They would not give my results but I later learned it confirmed what they saw in the ultrasound.

Also the nurse did say they always do a ct scan before operating.  Are you expecting to have yours removed? My surgery will be happening soon, it was postponed due to falling pregnant.

Hope everything works out for you.

  • I had a colonoscopy/ ct scan that showed bilateral complex cysts on both ovaries, after my clinic appointment l had a mri scan and bloods repeated, they were checking if the cysts had grown larger. I am having them removed 16 th October the surgeon said that it might not reduce the pain that l have on the left side. As l am post menopausal they advised surgery as the best option as they can be precancerous.

l hope you have your problems sorted soon

    susie

  • Hope your op goes well.

    I see a gynaecology person 16 October,

as scan my doctors words looks sinister , bloods were ok .

what ever happen s I won't the ovaries / cyst removed.

how long is your recovery ?

  • I hope to have laparoscopic excision keyhole of my ovaries, tubes and  biopsies the surgeon did say it may all be stuck together due to previous surgery, which may mean laparotomy open surgery. If laparoscopic the recovery is 2/3 weeks open is more like up to 4/6 months. So fingers crossed that it's the easier op. I was admitted 28 September but cancelled due to lack of theatre time after waiting 7 hours, so it's COVID test Wednesday and isolation again for Saturday op. Hoping that it gets done this time.

  • Hope it all went well ? And you are ok
