New mole appeared out of nowhere

Hi, I'm 20 years old and have really bad health anxiety and my biggest fear is cancer. I found a mole today under my arm that has just appeared within this week. It is dark brown and seems to be a normal shape but I can't stop worrying nonetheless. I'm also afraid of bothering my doctors with this but also can't stop having anxiety and panic attacks over it. Any help or recommendations would be much appreciated, thank you !

  • Hi Natalie, I have recently gone through diagnosis of a mole and my GP was really responsive. As many GPs are still doing a mixture of face to face and in person visits, I would recommend you take a photo of the mole with a tape measure next to it so they can see the size, take a few photos if you can or get someone to safely take them for you. Contact your GP tomorrow, explain your concern and that you can send photos. They can give you the opportunity to upload them so that they can have a look at them and they will call you back. It will most likely be fine but everyone should treat new or changing moles seriously and you are not bothering them. They treat it seriously, trust me. Please try not to worry in the meanwhile but also don't feel like you are taking up their time unnecessarily. I hope you get it sorted shortly and all is well.

  • Hi Natalie,

I agree with everything Tracy has advised. The GP won't think you are bothering them so don't worry about contacting them. There is every chance your mole is fine but it needs checking out, especially for your peace of mind. It's natural for new moles to appear at your age but a quick check should ease your fears and, if it does look a bit dodgy, it's been caught very, very quickly. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,#

  • Hi Tracy, thank you so much for your reply. I just left my appointment and they reassured me that it was a normal mole and that those areas aren't likely to be melanoma as well as showing me melanoma moles so I know what to look for in the future. I also stated my fear of wasting their time and they reassured me that I wasn't and that I can go as many times as I like as long as I feel at ease. I hope you are doing well too!

  • Hi Angie, thanks so much for your reply. I had it checked out just now and they reassured me that it was just a normal mole and as you said natural for new moles to appear. Thank you so much for your help!

  • Hi Natalie,

So good to hear that. At least you now know that your GP is very approachable and you know how to keep an eye on your moles in the future. Take care,

    Angie
