Waiting for breast biopsy results

Hi all.

I'm 33 and 20 weeks pregnant. Went to breast clinic last night after waiting a month for an appointment after being referred by GP. I had ultrasound but she still wasn't sure what it was so I had to have a biopsy done as well. As if the month wait wasnt long enough I now have to wait another 10 days for any further info. She mentioned she was hopeful it is a fibroid adenoma but can't be sure. I know that 80% of biopsies come back as benign but it is so difficult to not think about that 20% and the worst case ya know? Don't really know the point of this post other than wondering if anyone else is currently waiting for biopsy results. I've taken today off work as I've just stressed myself out so much :(

    Hi!
So after I had the mammogram, US and biopsy I was sent back to see the surgeon. He told me that the scans had been classified as "uncertain", so I'd have to wait for the biopsy results for any more info. He told me that all results are discussed at a MDT (multi-disclipinary team) meeting which is held every Friday, but as my appointment was a Thursday the results would not be back in time for that week's meeting, so they are due to be discussed Friday this week, and I should hear something next week. I don't know if it may be the same situation at your hospital? I'm not sure whether 7 - 10 days includes weekends or not. I would have thought it does but I'm definitely not certain.

My scans being classed as "uncertain" means that both the mammogram and ultrasound were M3 / U3. They use a numbering scale for scans where 1 means normal tissue, 2 means benign, 3 means uncertain but probably benign, 4 means suspicious for malignancy, and 5 means highly suspicious for malignancy. So being given a 3 for both scans means that what they saw had no obviously malignant features, but that they couldn't be certain it's benign either.
I also found from the report that the surgeon sent my GP that when he examined me he felt that the lump was a 2, i.e. benign. So I definitely feel reassured by that and hopeful that the biopsy results will be good. The radiologist said it was "probably something like a fibroadenoma, but we'll need to do a biopsy to be sure". I asked if he could see anything that made it look suspicious, and he said "there's nothing obviously suspicious but the biopsy will tell us for definite".

Really hope you get your results back ASAP, do keep us updated!

  • Hey [@dustcat]‍

hopefully next week comes around quick for you for your results!  My doc on Monday said it would be discussed in a panel meeting and id get the results Thursday (3days later) worried me as I think why am I going to be getting the results so quick unless it was urgent/bad!

anyway, glad you feel reassured! Keep us updated!

  • [@worried9211]‍
I don't think it's anything to do with the urgency of them, I think it's literally just that the meetings are held once a week, so if you get lucky and have your appointment on the right day, your results can be discussed the same week and you'll get them quicker!
The good thing is that when you have your follow-up appointment (or phone call), you'll know that the results have been discussed by all the doctors (and specialist nurses) together, and so you won't just be getting the opinion of one doctor, so you can be confident that they've got things right

  • Hey [@dustcat]‍

Yes that's very true...you know there's a lot of clever brains that have reviewed it and so can be confident in what ever result they give you.

wish I thought like you! X

  • That is super helpful, thank you! You have given me a lot of info there that I wasn't aware of. I didn't have a mammogram due to being pregnant but that is very useful info. Thanks for responding, I will be sure to write in here once I get results. I hope yours come back quickly too but sounds very positive from what they have said so far x

  • Just had my follow-up appointment through for getting results - it's next Wednesday morning at the hospital

[@Worried9211] I hope you get your results today!

  • Hi I was at the clinic yesterday, they took 5 biopsies & will get results next Friday.

Consultant has already told me it's cancer from looking at mammogram & scan, next weeks will be results & treatment plan

  • Hey [@Brie21]‍

so sorry to hear this!  How old are you may I ask?  Did you have a mammogram & an U/S or just the mammo?  What were your symptoms to prompt you to go to breast clinic?

[@dustcat]‍  glad you have a date!! hopefully I'll get mine soon.  Feel so sick.

  • Hi worried9211 I'm 49. I found a lump a few months back & stupidly ignored it! My nipple then started to invert a little & you could clearly see where the lump was.

Had mammogram & ultrasound, then biopsies once I was given the bad news.

  • Hey [@Brie21]‍

well atleast you've been seen now and a treatment plan can be put in place.  Sending you hugs. There are many woman going through the same thing.... so don't feel alone.
