Waiting for breast biopsy results

Hi all.

I'm 33 and 20 weeks pregnant. Went to breast clinic last night after waiting a month for an appointment after being referred by GP. I had ultrasound but she still wasn't sure what it was so I had to have a biopsy done as well. As if the month wait wasnt long enough I now have to wait another 10 days for any further info. She mentioned she was hopeful it is a fibroid adenoma but can't be sure. I know that 80% of biopsies come back as benign but it is so difficult to not think about that 20% and the worst case ya know? Don't really know the point of this post other than wondering if anyone else is currently waiting for biopsy results. I've taken today off work as I've just stressed myself out so much :(

  • Hi! Sorry to hear that you're going through this process.
I am in the same boat, had a breast clinic appointment today for a prominent lump - I am 38 years old. They did a mammogram, then ultrasound, and took 2 biopsies (he said the second was just to make sure they had enough tissue to analyse) as the lump was solid and definitely not a cyst.
The radiologist said there was nothing obviously suspicious but they had to do a biopsy to be sure. Saw the surgeon again afterwards and he said they've classified it as "uncertain" so I just have to wait and see.
Just wanted to let you know that you're definitely not alone, and I hope your results come back ASAP!

So sorry I did not reply sooner, not sure why I'm not getting notifications for this thread, strange!

I'm glad that they said that there was nothing obvious that was supspicious so that's good news. Not sure what the 'uncertain' is about, were you told that the same day you had the U/S and biopsy? Are you still waiting for your results to come back through as I can see that we seemed to have had the biopsy the same day? Do you think when they say 7-10 days that they mean working days or include weekends? Just curious as it's been 7 days now so hoping the results come through soon. Hope you are keeping well x

    Hi!
So after I had the mammogram, US and biopsy I was sent back to see the surgeon. He told me that the scans had been classified as "uncertain", so I'd have to wait for the biopsy results for any more info. He told me that all results are discussed at a MDT (multi-disclipinary team) meeting which is held every Friday, but as my appointment was a Thursday the results would not be back in time for that week's meeting, so they are due to be discussed Friday this week, and I should hear something next week. I don't know if it may be the same situation at your hospital? I'm not sure whether 7 - 10 days includes weekends or not. I would have thought it does but I'm definitely not certain.

My scans being classed as "uncertain" means that both the mammogram and ultrasound were M3 / U3. They use a numbering scale for scans where 1 means normal tissue, 2 means benign, 3 means uncertain but probably benign, 4 means suspicious for malignancy, and 5 means highly suspicious for malignancy. So being given a 3 for both scans means that what they saw had no obviously malignant features, but that they couldn't be certain it's benign either.
I also found from the report that the surgeon sent my GP that when he examined me he felt that the lump was a 2, i.e. benign. So I definitely feel reassured by that and hopeful that the biopsy results will be good. The radiologist said it was "probably something like a fibroadenoma, but we'll need to do a biopsy to be sure". I asked if he could see anything that made it look suspicious, and he said "there's nothing obviously suspicious but the biopsy will tell us for definite".

Really hope you get your results back ASAP, do keep us updated!

  • Hey [@dustcat]‍

hopefully next week comes around quick for you for your results!  My doc on Monday said it would be discussed in a panel meeting and id get the results Thursday (3days later) worried me as I think why am I going to be getting the results so quick unless it was urgent/bad!

anyway, glad you feel reassured! Keep us updated!

I don't think it's anything to do with the urgency of them, I think it's literally just that the meetings are held once a week, so if you get lucky and have your appointment on the right day, your results can be discussed the same week and you'll get them quicker!
The good thing is that when you have your follow-up appointment (or phone call), you'll know that the results have been discussed by all the doctors (and specialist nurses) together, and so you won't just be getting the opinion of one doctor, so you can be confident that they've got things right

  • Hey [@dustcat]‍

Yes that's very true...you know there's a lot of clever brains that have reviewed it and so can be confident in what ever result they give you.

wish I thought like you! X

  • Hi [@worried9211]‍  just wondering if you ended up getting your results today? If so I hope it went well x

  • Hey [@xemx]‍   [@dustcat]‍

I have a fibroadenoma!!! To say I am shocked/relieved is an understatement.  I genuinely prepared myself for bad news.  I of course feel over the moon.

I hope that you all get good news too! I will be praying for you!  Just goes to show you.... have hope with what the outcome might be!

    keep me updated x

  • [@worried9211]‍  I am so happy for you! this is the best news :)

I can't remember if you said or not, but how long was it after having your biopsy until today when you got the results? Did you get a letter/told over the phone or go back to the clinic for results?

I am really hoping that my outcome is the same as yours, on day 8 of waiting for a call or something though so I am praying for it every day!

  • Thanks [@xemx]‍ !!!!

attended the clinic Monday (5th) and got results today, so only had to wait 3days... the NHS are amazing!
I'll be hoping and praying for you too! I'm sure you'll get your answers very soon!  Big big hugs x

  • [@worried9211]‍
There you go!! That's great news, so relieved for you! I knew you'd be OK!

    [@xemx]‍
My hospital has an app/online portal that patients can have an account with - I am already a long-term patient with them due to IBD, so I already have the app set up and I got a notification today with the appointment details for next week, but there will be a physical appointment letter sent too.
My clinic appointment when I had the biopsy was last Thursday.

  • Hi All,

just thought I'd drop in and let you know I have lumpy glandular tissue so all ok here thankfully!

hope everyone waiting gets positive news!

  • [@G.]‍
That is great news, what a relief for you!

I had my follow-up appointment today and unfortunately have been diagnosed with cancer. It's ductal, grade 3, triple negative. The surgeon says that we will do lumpectomy surgery (and sentinel node biopsy/removal) in just under 2 weeks, after recovery from that I will have chemo and then probably radiotherapy too. I'm feeling OK about it all and am just looking at it as stages of treatment that we need to do in order to get rid of it. Hospital have been absolutely brilliant so I'm confident that I'm in good hands!

Have you heard anything about your results yet?
