Breast clinic beginner…

Hi! I've just been referred to the breast clinic as I've found a small lump... at this stage, I know it could be any number of things so trying not to worry... I've never been to a breast clinic (too young for routine screening) so I wanted some practical advice on what might happen during and after? I've got 3 kids at primary school so really need to know what I'm dealing with so I can get husband/friends/family to step in if needed... particularly with all the covid restrictions etc I'd rather have a plan in place...
I know that what will happen at the appt might vary depending on what they find, but if I do need some kind of biopsy I'm wondering how long the appointment might take, will I be able to drive myself home and do the school run that day or should I make other plans? My appt is first thing (9.30). Will it hurt for long afterwards etc? I've read the official stuff but have found from previous experiences its massively downplayed and 'some discomfort' equals complete agony/cant move...

Any advice/things you wished you'd known beforehand would be great.

thanks x

  • Hi there ...

Firstly my first four call backs from mamorgrams over the years were fine.... 8.5 out of ten lumps are benign... and even better odds the younger you are ...

On the last one I went to, it was about 3 hours in total, with waiting in between ... I had a Dr examine the breast first .. then a mamorgram, which is painful for me as I had lumpy boobs any way ... most think it's uncomfortable but doable .... then I had an ultra sound which tickles more then anything ... then I had a biopsy taken ... which was like having my ears pierced.... sharp jurk in, but although it was like a sharp pain then o.k... I had that 2 / 3 times ... I'm so glad my daughter in law was with me to hold my hand ..

Half an hour after we went to Costa for a well earned coffee ... and was a tad tender but nothing much .. hope that helps ... but you should be fine driving home after ... but having someone take you and drive you home is a good back up, and helps talking about it too ...

Fingers crossed for a good result.... Chrissie x

  • Hi [@Kaila-mum]‍

It can be daunting on your first trip and knowing what to expect, but Chriss has given you great information.

I think most appointments are around 2 -3 hours, just because they do like to be able to cover everything in the one appointment and all in the same place so as not to drag it out over different days and appointments.

My extra advice is, as you are going first thing in the morning that is great as you are asked not to wear deodarant, I'm not a smelly person but on the appointments I do like to take some with me to put on after the appointment. And wear something that is loose fitting and easy to take off as they give you a tabbard type top to wear.

You see the consultant first where you take your top and bra off, then get dressed to move to the next area, where you go into a changing room to take off your top again and put the tabbard on. which you stay in until you have had your mammogram and ultrasound if needed. ( Each breast clinic I am sure is different in layout, mine is over three floors in a stand alone building from the main hospital. so top floor is consultant then go down to one of the other floors for the mammogram and ultrasound)

It is generally all woman staff, you might occasionally see a male doctor there, but they do not come into the mammogram or ultrasound. And even if you went with a husband or boyfriend they are also not allowed into the mammogram or ultrasound area. They staff have always been very polite and friendly and put you at ease.

I hope all goes well for your first experience and that nothing untoward is found.

    Good Luck x
