Endometrial Hyperplasia - IUD???

Hi,

I have been bleeding since March, heavily and lots of clots for the majority of the time. I have a thicksened lining of 23mm. I am having a hysteroscopy and biopsy next week and they have advised for me to have an IUD fitted at the same time. The thought of an IUD makes me feel uncomfortable, just wondering whether you have found it ok or have you had complications or problems with it?

Thanks

  • Hi Quinloui,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I wanted to send a reply as it will mean a few more people should see your post and so if anyone has similar experience to share then hopefully they'll be along soon.

I hope all goes well with your appointment.

    Wishing you all the best,

  • Hi Quinloui

i have had the same procedure as you with hysteroscopy/biopsy/polypectomy and IUD insertion at the same time.

the doc suggested to me just before the procedure that it would be a good idea to have the IUD regardless of what they found in order to manage the bleeding and thin out the lining. To be honest I hadn't given it any thought beforehand and felt a bit rushed into making a decision there and then but I decided to go for it because I was told if I did have endometrial hyperplasia (which it turns out I did have!) then I would have to come back in for the IUD then.

I'm really pleased I did it at the same time now to be honest. One of the benefits was having a gynaecologist do the insertion and I'd heard some horror stories from friends about pain with insertion when it was inserted by a GP/nurse. Also because I'd had quite a long procedure with a polyp removal they had ended up giving me a local anaesthetic in my cervix midway through my hysteroscopy - and so I'm sure that made it less painful too! (Remember you can ask for a local anaesthetic if it's uncomfortable/painful (which I don't think you can get in GP surgery). )

after it was inserted I was fine for a few days but about a week later I started bleeding really heavily (not sure if that was my lining thining out?!) and I ended up seeing the gynae again who had to confirm it was still in place but then put me on progesterone pill as well just to get things fully under control and to stop me expelling the IUD. So now I have both - the IUD and the pill - and tbh it's wonderful as I don't feel anything and there's no bleeding!

obviously everybody feels differently about these things, but overall I would say go for it.

    hope that helps.

  • Hi,

You haven't returned, so I guess things all went well and your questions were addressed by the Doctor. I believe it is standard procedure to treat both hyperplasia (and often type 1 endometrial cancer in the short term) with the IUD coil. This is because both conditions are fueled by unopposed oestrogen and therefore the progesterone delivered locally is the best initial treatment. For those who do not wish to have the IUD coil, then oral progesterone is offered.

I am hoping things have gone well for you. I have had the same symptoms as you, also since March with daily bleeding and an ultrasound revealed a thickened endometrium of 24mm. I was extremely concerned about endometrial cancer, but the D&C biopsy and hysteroscope has come back negative for that. I will see the Consultant next week for the full details. I did have the Mirena coil fitted at the same time. I have never used one for contraception, because my GP was unable to fit it on the two occassions it was attempted. My Mum had the copper coil for many years, so I wasn't too concerned about having it fitted whilst under general anaesthetic.
