HPV Positive & Abnormal Cells

Hi, I am 25 and just recently had my first smear test, I have received a letter back to say I am HPV Positive and that I also have abnormal cells, they've called it "low grade dyskaryosis". This is all so new to me, I have a 5 month old daughter and I've spent the day worrying so much and in tears. Has anyone been in this position before? Google sort of explains it but I can't help but panic. I'm just awaiting another letter to book me in for a Colposcopy. Because they've told me it's low grade is this a good sign and my abnormal cells could just be HPV related? A little advIce would be great. Worried sick. Thank you

  • Hey,

I don't have any advice but have been finding these forums helpful. I had a letter last night also HPV positive with severe high grade dyskaryosis, have an appointment at the oncology ward in a week.

I'll come back to let you know how it goes but it's so great we've been screened and can now tackle whatever it is head on. xxx

  • Hi Cocowhit

The HPV virus is the cause of abnormal cells, but abnormal cells are not cancer. Most sexually active people will have had the HPV virus, but in the vast majority of cases it doesn’t cause any issues, and people will not know they have it.

Sometimes, however, it can cause cells in the cervix to change but being described as low grade changes means that this has been caught early and can be easily treated, or in some cases just monitored.

The colposcopy will allow a closer look at your cervix and a liquid will be applied to identify the area of abnormal cells. From there will be decided what action needs to be taken, if any. Try not to stress yourself out over this...it’s a really common thing to have, and easily treated.

  • Hi, I have just had the same letter through!
from what I can see online the virus can lay dormant for 10-20 years!!! And our bodies do nothing then all of a sudden it shows up! Hip is what they vaccinate against now in teenage girls.
from what I can see this HVP and low grade is super common and easily treated! This is why we have smear tests to nip in the bud!
I totally get your concern I feel abit shocked too but it will get sorted

    keep us posted
