FiT test 'nothing flagged' but having face to face appt

Bit worried. Waiting the result of a FIT test for bowel cancer. Rang my GP surgery on Friday for the results. Receptionist said no-one was available to talk to me but a doctor would ring me on Monday. I asked the receptionist if they had the tests back and they said yes and that "nothing had been flagged". I took that to mean my test was normal and there was nothing to worry about. Phew! However, today I received a text message to say I have an appointment at 10.30 tomorrow at the surgery. Why do I need to see a doctor face-to-face if the test was negative? Does anyone know if 'nothing is flagged' on the test result that the receptionist sees if this means the result is negative? I'm not sure how to interpret it. Thanks.

  • Hi John and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry no-one was able to get back to you before you saw your doctor but I hope your appointment went well and they were able to put your mind at ease.

I hope they managed to answer all your questions as well but if there are a few things playing on your mind since you spoke with them then you're welcome to talk things through with our cancer nurses on 0808 800 4040, Monday - Friday between 9a.m - 5p.m.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi John how did you get on. My doc called me to advise I had tested positive and being referred. Hopefully you got on OK

  • I'm just posting to reassure you that even if you have a positive result all may be ok. I had a positive FIT test a few weeks ago and had a letter to say I would be getting a call to discuss it. A colonoscopy was arranged, and I was out of my mind with worry.  The prep for the colonoscopy was awful but bearable although I didn't sleep at all the night before and was seriously considering running away even as I sat in the waiting area. I have to say everyone I had contact with was absolutely lovely and the colonoscopy was more or less painless (I opted for sedation but didn't feel sedated at all). It turns out I have internal haemorrhoids, even though my G.P had declared definitely didn't have them when I had told him I was bleeding on more than one occasion. I'm both relieved and grateful, but also I have thought so much about all the people having less good news. I hope it's eventually good news for you. Take it a step at a time and go and get any tests you are offered.

  • Gilbert,

That's great news it's not bad news. I have my colonoscopy on Thursday, been less than 2 weeks since results but I'm glad I'm getting it done sooner rather than later. Not looking forward to the prep but needs must. I'm hoping for good news but preparing for the worst (my coping mechanism). Just worried for my 18 year old son if it is bad news.
