Swollen Lymph Node

Hello

I had the AZ vaccine 10 weeks ago now. About a week after I noticed a lump in my armpit on the same side as the vaccine. The doctor has said she believes it is a swollen lymph node and I have been referred to the breast clinic next week. I have a family history of breast cancer in my father's side with relatives who were in their early 40s so I am a little concerned. I am 32.

Ive read swollen lymph nodes are a side effect of the vaccination but that they should go down within a week or so. Being 10 weeks in has made me anxious. The lump is about the size and shape of a kidney bean and I don't have any other kind of symptoms that I'm aware of. Has anyone else had swollen lymph nodes this long after the vaccination or had anything similar that has not turned out to be anything serious?

Thank you

  • Hi there,

Glad your US went ok, that's good.
Neither of my jabs were painful, no. The 2nd one i barely felt.
Did your Dr/Radiographer explain anything about why your neck is tight? or what's going on with the muscles?
Mine feels contantly tight/pulling now & still some tingling along the jaw, feel like i need to keep stretching my neck out,but it doesn't seem to help.

I'm procrastinating whether to get in touch with the doctor to discuss it, but i'm not sure she'll have any answers for me...and probably just suggest another US :/

    xx

  • Hi [@Justmehere]‍

just wondering if you still have the lump now ?

I had my AZ back in March, had ultrasound in June and still have mine now!

Sometimes my anxiety gets the better of me!!

  • Hi Daisy,

I've been meaning to ping you back for about a month!

I saw the doctor about my stiff neck, she was certain it was just muscle tension, and likened it to when you have a bad back, the muscles tense up to protect the back.

I think in my case it started with the anxiety over the swollen gland, and kinda got stuck like that.

Anyhow, she prescribed me a mild prescription of Amitriptylene (10mg).
An anti-depressant, that in low doses acts as a painkiller.
Within 3 days of taking these everything relaxed. I took them for 2 weeks and have had no issues since.

So i hope this is helpful to you xx

  • Hi,

I had my jab in Feb, GP found the swollen lymph node under my arm in April and it’s still there, I have had a number of scans on it, all telling me it looks fine! Was told it’s  1.5cm

Its quite deep in armpit so awkward to feel but I don’t think it’s got any bigger, but it’s certainly not got any smaller either! I also have a smaller one further towards breast that seems to have stayed the same size as well.

i know what you mean about the anxiety, I had cancer in my lymph nodes under my other arm years ago so it’s definitely sent me into a spiral of panic about lymph nodes all year, I seem to think every lump or bump is another lymph node now, it’s a horrible feeling.

I too would be interested in knowing if anyone has had them stay up this long? I did read some articles saying that they are staying up for longer than first thought after the jab...or is it just a case of in some people they’re not going back down once enlarged.

  • Hi @Mrs.CMS

thank you so much for responding! It's actually great to here that I'm not the only one, I was also told that the lymph node is small and probably feels bigger to me when I search for it.
minds also in a awkward position high in the armpit almost in crease where you fold your arm!

I did see one post that they now think it can last a year ?!?
also someone said its sign you still have antibodies towards covid 19? Not sure how true that is.

I hope more comes out about it soon its worried me sick especially as I'm pregnant !!!

do you find you can feel it better in the shower under hot water ?

  • H,

Mine isn’t painful, is yours?  but it is where the crease of your armpit is and you sort of have to dig in to find it, which is probably how I never noticed it until the GP found it (I went in for something unrelated to armpit but she ended up checking my lymph nodes). I find mine more easily when I’m laid down on my opposite side and lift my arm up and get it into a funny position to find it.

I also have a much smaller one further down towards the breast (smaller but more prominent and larger than the normal sized ones). I have seen three different consultants about them as I was in a real panic, I’ve had it scanned quite a few times including at a specialist cancer centre and they all say it looks normal (they look at the structure of it on ultrasound) so I’m hoping they all know what they’re talking about!

I still worry about it in the back of my mind. Its hard to get your head around why it doesn’t go back down in size, especially when you hear people saying that there’s went away after a few weeks! Guess everyone is different though.

  • Nope I wouldn't say it's painful, tender to touch of mess around.
yes like you I havnt get in some positions to feel it good! My other half says it's gone smaller but I just dunno if he's telling me that!
I have also gone to nhs breast clinc and private clinc and both the same nothing to worry about but not very good at reassurance!
I understand their so busy but this has left me with so many questions which my GP can't answer.

looking to get another ultrasound to check it again tbh

  • Yours does sound very similar to mine, especially with where it is in the armpit. I'm the same in that I'm left with so many questions and don't really feel like Ive gotten to the bottom of it,

Did they say to you that they can stay enlarged? You'll have to let us know how you get on at your next scan?

  • Hi I have recently had mine scanned again I have had it since January. This would have been my 4th scan on it and each time they say it looks normal but I can still feel it. They say it has all normal features but I just still worry that it hasn't gone yet! Have they said what size yours is measuring?

  • Hi Saz88!

just had my pfizer booster on the 27th and yesterday my armpit hurts and swollen and have a huge lump, which is soft to touch.I panicked and can't stop thinking about it, until i saw this.. how long it take for the swollen to go down in size?
