Is it colon cancer?

Hi all,

Hope to find everyone well

I know it's impossible to say exactly but I just need to talk with someone...

I'm 34 and since last December (Christmas period immediately after the excesses, specially alcohol) I started with stomach pain, growling noises from the intestines (loads of this), loads of mucus in the stool and sometimes just defecating mucus, several trips to the bathroom, bloating, but fortunately no blood. This lasted for some weeks, where I did solid feces then diarrhea, the  yellowish stool, but then fortunately got better. During this period there was two weeks that I felt really tired, I would wake up and I was already tired. The pain in my belly would improve if my bowel would growl or I would go to the bathroom but the pain would never fully dissapear.

At this time I had changed jobs and was preparing to change houses. I lost 4 kilos in 3 months but I don't know if it was because of the decease or it it was the stress or if it was something else since because I was so desparate that I stopped eating almost everything, no gluten, no bad food, nothing. At the same time I was having loads of heartburn and was starting to loose my apetite and after starting taking Lanzoprazol (have a history of chronic gastritis) I improved and now I already passed from 84 to 87Kg in a month and half and my weight has stabilized.

I always had issues in my bowel and stomach since I know myself, but specially only with gases that gave me really bad abdominal pain (that would improve as soon as I would release them) and sometimes mucus in my stool. I've had this for years but nothing like this now...

Regarding exams I did a FIT test that came back negative, did a Faecal Calprotectin test that came with 127mg/kg (the reference max value is 50), and endoscopy that accused gastritis, a full blood count that was normal plus some more tests to the blood that were normal as well, two ultrasounds that came back clean with the only notes being excessive gas in the stomach, duodenum and ascending colon. Regarding the ascending colon, the technician said it was so inflated that she couldn't even see the right kidney and that she would advise investigation since I was complaining from that area.

The belly pain from March until now improved, but I could always feel some pain/discomfort (like pressure) on the right side that would move to under the ribs, from the front, to the appendice area would go to the back, but always, always in the right side.

I was consulted by a gastro doctor that told me with 99% certainty that according to my symptoms and exams that I did, that I have IBS and colitis (probably from the alcohol) (hence the pain/discomfort) on the right side. Meanwhile I saw another doctor that because I had the Calprotectin slightly raised it decided to prescribe a colonoscopy and I'm going to do it this Monday, five months since all of this started.

Also two weeks ago I returned to work after a week's holiday and I got so stressed on monday that on Thursday my belly started to hurt again (don't know if it was from the stress but I presume so) and since then it has been hurting me, some days more than other and predominantly the lower part of the abdomen, the last three days I've been going several times to the bathroom and today I did loads of mucus, but my stools are normal slightly soft but normal. I defecate I get better but after a while the pain comes back again.

Can this be because of the anxiety? Should I worry about this?

I guess on Monday I will know exactly what I have but from the symptoms above what do you guys think?

P.S: Also forgot to mention, after the worst assed in the beginning and until now my intestines have worked like a clock (despite the pain and discomfort on the right side), everyday around the same time I would go to the bathroom. Now the last three days I've gone around 3 to 4 times a day to the bathroom...

  • Hi Mass. Welcome to the forum.

I'm not a doctor.  However, I do have a lifetime's experience with IBS.

Your symptoms appear to match with IBS, but the colonoscopy should shed more light on the situation.  If (as we hope) IBS is confirmed by a doctor then please get back as I can shed some light on how I'm now able to manage my IBS.

Good luck with the colonoscopy.  The worst part of the whole procedure is the prep the day before!
