Bleeding from vagina after a bowel movement!

Hi all. I am looking for advice as I am freaking out. Quick background - 30 year old female, mother of 2. (Youngest is 2 years old) both delivered by emergency c section. No previous medical conditions. I last had a smear test done in January 2020 and result came back normal. For the last 6 months or so my periods have been Irregular and most recently I have been spotting a lot in between periods. I have also discovered the connection that every time I have a bowel movement I bleed from my vagina!! I can't find any other explanation for this other than cervical cancer! Anyone experienced this?? TIA!

  • I am waiting a gynae appointment. I really hope you get good news, it's extremely worrying, l think l may lose my mind with worry. I am very constipated and have piles, so l am hoping that's a contributing factor. I have 3 small kids, so you can imagine my fears.

  • Thankyou, trying to put it to the back of my mind. I have piles too, just hope it’s something to do with . Hope you get your appointment soon. Once they finally decided to send me a gynaecologist I was seen quite quickly. Sending love

  • Hiya. Im sorry everyone is going through all this worry, but i have been reading through some of these comment and realised i have been experiencing the same. i am 34, I have had bleeding for over 2 weeks now, brown when wipe then bright red just after a bowel movement, (sorry for the to much info) i had my smear October 2024 and was fine, I do have PCOS and endometriosis. I can't get a GP appointment either. I need to wait till Monday to try again..

  • Hi Star3404,

First I would like to say I am not a qualified medic and only speaks from my own many experiences regarding bleeding. If you had a smear in October last year you are probably in the clear regarding that matter as abnormal cell changes take years to develop in most cases. That's why smear test are done years apart. Your bleeding could may be you suffering from endometriosis as I understand they are depending on hormonal changes. My last bleeding was due to hormonal changes, which can happen for many reasons your doctor can explain for you. Try your best to stay calm and get an appointment to put  your mind at rest. All the best to you.

  • Thank you for replying. Yea I did think it may hormonal, just scares me, I know someone my age had cervical cancer and it was missed on the smear test. Cancer is big in my family, and with my mental health, my brain goes to the worst-case scenario because nothing can get worse if you think the worst. Awful thought process, I know. I'm going to push for a appointment Monday and hope they help

  • Cervical cancer is not general classified as a inherent cancer as some breast cancer. It's a long term viral infection that CAN develop into cancer IF going unnoticed for years in most cases. Hope that put you mind to rest.

  • Hello I have been googling symptoms o have been having lately and this thread came up. My last few period have been around 2 weeks roughly apart and have linked after bowl movement is when I first discovered red blood on wipe from the front. The first couple times I didn’t really think anything  of it but now it’s every time and I have it with the usual period symptoms cramping I loose appetite when having a period usually and just feel bit rubbish but I haven’t bleed 24 hours since, little bit of discharge but nothing else. My tummy it’s actually really sore like I’m on a heavy period but I’m currently not bleeding. I am seeing a gyno had bloods done and sending me for ultrasound but kicking myself as cancelled it for Monday as thought came on but have had no blood since and first time can then get me in is two weeks. My period seem to last up to a week now with lightly bleeding then really heavy then light bleeding again I used to be on for only a couple days before. I’m not sure if I’m over thinking everything and in the past I did bleed then nothing for couple days but it’s something I can’t seem to shift thinking about and the first dr I saw didn’t think bleeding was linked to anything so not sure if it is common ore period. Sorry if this makes no sense just needed to let it out

  • I have had horrendous chronic constipation since I was born so I know what it's like. I've only been to the toilet 3 times this year and altogether it added up to around one normal days poo to a reguar person. I've been having problems on n off with the bleedings. I recently came off her as it wasn't agreeing with the neuropsychology I have everywhere but I passed 2 malteser sized plops is best o describe and when I wiped from the front it was a lot of red blood. I haven't had a sexual partner in 16 years because of this problem. I always seem to have BV or antibiotics for an infectection ten before a week or so, I'm getting symptoms of BV again. I'm afraid to see the Dr about this because I have much worse things going on and TBH I don't think I want to know. I'm on my own. I have no help or support and my mum, aunt and cousin all passed away within the last 6 years. If it was going to off me, I think I'd have been dead long ago so plz I don't have good experiences with Dr's, hosptals and nurses. I'm so confused. I feel like a bolt of lightning has jolted me back to gained weight after losing 5.5 stone. Everything bloody hurts. I am on my last nerve with everyone around me. Nobody listens to me and it's a problem. Could something be prolopsed or polyps. Nearly killed her 1st time with cancer. I'm scared. Any advice please???

I absolutely hear you and that brings you to the internet where we read some terrible things. GPs give you no info when they Are doing some tests. What tests though???  They never say. I went to collect a prescription for antibiotics for my throat and a Dr called me in n tells me I've something in my left lung n it could be cancer. I can't get started on that long wait and I still don't really know anything for sure. I'm going to go to my Dr but like yourself, I'll probably not be heard or taken notice of but I'll keep you posted. Good luck luvvie xx

  • It sounds like you may have some sort of prolapse or fistula - whcih means the poo is going somewhere rather than it should be, and this pressure is causing the issues with your vagina or urinary tract.

I would 100% go to your doctor!  Please tell them that you are expering only 3 bowel movements a year (this is enough to warrant an urgent investigation) and might require surgery, or a device that helps lift the prolapse. Both of which will help you no end. Take care.
