Colposcopy Referral - Stressing so much!

Good evening

I had my smear test just under 4 weeks ago and received a letter today. I'm 37 and my smear tests have always come back clear until this one. It says HPV Positive and high grade (moderate) dyskaryosis and that I should get an appointment in the next 5 working days.

I am a nervous mess already, thinking of the worse and just wanted some advice from anyone that's been through it no matter the outcome. I have read the booklet and probably made the mistake of going onto the nhs site so would really rather hear from anyone that's been through it. Cancer unfortunately runs in my family so that's doesn't help the mind wondering off course. I've had changes to my discharge, more regular need for peeing and even loss of control there too, pain to pelvis and back and also a considerate amount of bleeding in sexual Intercourse. Something that had never happened before.

I would really appreciate anyone that can share their stories just so I know what to expect, whether good or bad please!

  • Hello Clauds25,

I'm sorry the results of your recent test have made you worried, but this doesn't mean cancer. When you are worried that you may have cancer, it can be tempting to look for answers, but this can end up increasing anxiety rather than making you feel better. I hope the information here reassures you in some way and don't be afraid to ask your doctor questions in the upcoming meeting.

    Best wishes,

  • Currently waiting for my Lletz treatment to remove cin 3 abnormal cells following an abnormal smear that indicated only low grade changes.  So am worried all the time.  I also have odd and worrying symptoms.  Pelvic pain, a couple of bleeds between periods and also lower back pain and uti symptoms (but it's not!). I'm really worried what they'll find after the lletz treatment. I'm 44 and came off mini pill about 9 months ago due to many hormonal issues.  Just can't stop thinking the worst.   Let me know how you get on. X

  • Hi ML2519

Thanks so much for your reply. I understand that worry completely and feel for you. The waiting for me is the worst part. I'm awful with waiting and just always fear and think of the worst. I'm terribly with pain so dreading my colposcopy on Monday. I have the coil fitted so if they confirm the high grade they'll do the LLETZ procedure there and then which means they'll have to remove it so that's also now playing on my mind. I'm just so angry right now because I've been suffering these symptoms for over a year now and nothing was done. I finally managed to book a gynaecology appointing for next month but that's taken like a year because of covid etc! At the smear test the nurse went and got a doctor which always worries you and then at the end I said to her why did you go and get a doctor and she said the entrance of my cervix was red raw and inflamed. As I said what gets me the most is the waiting. I just wanna know and deal with it ASAP! I am such a wimp I am dreading Monday but it's got to be done. I will be thinking of you. Let me know how you get on x

  • Yes, the waiting is definitely awful.  Sorry you had to wait so long to get seen.  My appt. is in a couple of weeks so will let you know how I get on.
    Take care. X

  • Hey, the fact all previous smears have come back normal is really reassuring. Cervical cancer takes like 10 years  to develop!

My last smear was 12 months ago, had another one this year and had high grade cin 2 cell changes. Had the lletz treatment this afternoon and honestly don't even know what I was worrying about. I am the biggest baby going, didnt even feel the needles or anything, was in and out in ten mins. Try not to worry too much, it's so common, it's actually amazing that they can prevent cancer just by such simple procedures.  Good luck! Xx

  • Hi Kriswrex29

Thank you so much for your reply. It is crazy how we get ourselves so wound up and worried. I had my procedure yesterday and got so upset but it was over in no time at all. I did most def feel the needles - can't believe they need 4 - but then didn't feel much after that. Just the heart from the loop but no pain. Now just to wait for the results. Hoping for the best for both of us x

  • Oh well done for getting through it. I think some people just have more sensitive cervixes maybe i told my doctor I hated needles and he really took his time with me so it really helped.

Worst is over anyway, just hoping no more treatment necessary. I am sure we will be fine, always amazes me how strong us ladies are xxx

  • Glad you're all done.  I'm going in for mine on Tuesday next week.  A bit anxious to say the least.  X
