Scared Daughter, dad showing signs of cancer, how to cope?

Hi,

I'm not sure if I'm in the right place but I thought I would reach out. My father has recently become quite unwell - without going into too much detail he has shown several signs of bowel cancer and the doctors have decided it would be unfair to investigate this which I agree with (lots of co-morbidities etc). His blood test results have come back with raised PSA of 10.8 - again, not going to be looked into.

I wondered if anyone can give me advice on how on earth I deal with this? I really don't know how to process it because we just don't know what is wrong. My father lives in a nursing home and so visiting him has been difficult given recent events in the world.

I'm sorry if I'm asking in the wrong place. I just don't know where to turn anymore, my family look to me because I am medical (not a doctor!!) and I don't know what to tell them anymore. He looks so pale and unwell. I'm really not ready to lose my dad.

  • Hi there,

My Dad has received a cancer diagnosis today. I can understand some of what you're going through as the waiting for the diagnosis has been hell. I feel surprisingly relieved now we have it as we know what we are dealing with.

Anyway I am sorry to hear what you are going through, my family rely on me too as I am the eldest. It might help to speak to his dr if possible as I think you need and deserve some answers, so that you know what you are dealing with. It might help for you to speak with your GP or  contact a helpline such as Macmillan or Marie Curie (not sure if Cancer Research have one?) to get some support.
I hope you get some answers soon ️
