Thyroid Lump Waiting time

Hi everyone,

I'll try and keep it brief.  I'm a 49 yo male.

6weeks ago l contacted my gp with sinus problems, tight chest and a large golf size lump in my neck.  I was prescribed antibiotics during a telephone consultation and told if lump grew or didn't disappear to call back. It got bigger so l phoned back and was invited to have a physical examination. After being examined my gp said he was concerned about the lump and referred me for a fast track consultation with ent, l had a phone call and was seen by a consultant 3 days later.  The consultant examined me and put a tube up my nose and down my throat and said he thought I had a thyroid tumour and would need a scan and biopsy with the possibility of surgery. Having just lost my father in law to oesophagus cancer l was a bit taken aback and should have asked more questions,  it's been nearly two weeks and l haven't had any appointments (we have had the Easter break inbetween which may slow things down)  and just wondered if anyone knew how long it is in general from initial ent appt to scans and biopsy,  l know hospitals are struggling at the moment and l don't want to be a nuisance.

Any advice or experience of wait times would be very much appreciated.  Thank you for taking the time to read this..

Best wishes to you all.

UPDATE: sods law,  after asking on here I've received an appointment for ultrasound and biopsy on 5 May.

  • Hi Karmaguy,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I know you have posted an update to your original post (glad to hear you have the appointment booked in now) but I just wanted to send a reply anyway and to say that I hope the appointment goes well and that the wait doesn't feel too difficult. Try to keep yourself busy to keep your mind off things while waiting, as this can often help.

I hope you find the forum useful and we're always here for support if you need it.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hi Ben,

Thank you for your welcome and kind words,  they are very much appreciated.

Keep up the good work,  best wishes.

  • Hi! How are you? Very similar symptoms here too. X

  • Hi molly251,

My ultrasound and fine needle biopsy were originally due to be done tomorrow, however this was changed and l had it 2 weeks ago.  The ultrasound and biopsy procedures were both straight forward. The biopsy itself is simple and pain free,  less feeling than a blood test in my opinion,  the doctor doing it said the lump was 5cm.

The nurse told me the results would take 1-3 weeks it's 2 weeks tomorrow since l had the procedure and I'm still waiting for the results,  I'm now in the mindset no news is good news but the wait is doing my head in.l keep telling myself if it was bad news l would have heard by now surely??

Hope you get things sorted,  l know it's easier said than done but try not to worry,  Best wishes and let us know how you get on.

  • Bless you. I really hope you get your results soon! Please let me know how they go.

Really good to know it's painless. I've been referred to the Thyroid specialists today after 6 weeks of pain and feeling like I can't swallow, tight chest etc. They first said it was tonsitlis and went on antibiotics for 3 weeks but nothing has changed. Hoping it won't be long until a scan!

Thank you, trying to relax. I'm only 26 so I'm hoping it's something small but when it's in your throat, as you well know, its hard to ignore and becomes difficult to live with.

Sending you lots of positive vibes.

  • Hi,

I am currently having pretty much identical symptoms, ive felt like theres been something in my throat/neck for the last month or two, went to the drs as there is now a visible lump at the base of my neck, the size of a golf ball, they sent me for a fast track refferal to an ENT, had the camera down the nose etc, he said he would be referring me for an mri & a biopsy, but all ive had through is a text message about a telephone appointment in June so now i dont really know what to do, just more weeks of freaking out whilst trying not to freak out!

I'm also just 27, single mum to two young babies, i just find myself crying every day at the moment!

  • Hi lovely,

So sorry your going through this too. It really is horrible isn't it. It makes you feel like you can't get on with day to day life because it's so invasive and effects everything (eating, drinking).

I hate the waiting times, it's the worst bit! The only thing I can suggest to you is maybe calling your hospital and asking if they can get you in any quicker because you've got severe anxiety about it or if your really struggling, go to A&E. Not always the best option but sometimes you get seen really quickly.

I really hope your ok - sending you lots of love. Let us know how you get on xx

  • Just popping in to say I have had thyroid cancer and might be able to offer some reassurance/hope to those awaiting results.

For one thing, as I kept chanting to myself while awaiting my results "thyroid nodules are common; thyroid cancer is rare." Well, comparatively rare anyway. The vast majority of nodules are benign. I had an appointment to receive the results exactly a week after my biopsy, but this was in Ireland and private (Irish healthcare is bizarre) so the NHS may well be different.

Also thyroid cancer isn't usually exactly what one imagines with cancer. Most forms, especially the most common ones, have a very high survival rare. For patients under 45 or so with papillary thyroid cancer, the survival rate is supposed to be close to 100%. When I was diagnosed my consultant told me "ah, it's not the worst scenario in the world."

It's also usually treated with surgery, sometimes followed by radio-iodine treatment. No chemotherapy or anythng like that. I think there are some exceptions to this but in general. Radio-iodine treatment basically means just taking a pill to reduce the risk of reccurance. It's a little more complicated than that but that's more or less what it amounts to. The most annoying thing about that is you have to be in isolation for a few days afterwards.

I was out of work for about a month with the operation as I am a teacher and really needed to be both able to fully turn my head (to see what kids were up to!) and speak loudly enough to be heard in a busy classroom before returning to work, but that was really it. I was fine by the time I returned to work.

  • VctoriaEmily, sorry to hear what you are going through at the moment,  sending you best wishes and positive vibes.

MargaretMary - thank you so much for your post,  l found it really positive and uplifting,  everyone fears the worse with the C word but there are also so many positive outcomes out there.   Pleased to hear you are on the mend and again thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience,  it really does help.  Sending you all the best for the future.

  • Hi MargaretMary, thank you SO much for this! It's really re-assuring, lovely of you to say so. I have actually paid private (had to ruin my savings) for an ultrasound on Tuesday, I just need it sooner, my mental health won't last that long!

I hope your ok now. Thanks again for sharing you expierence x
