Husband being sent for colonoscopy

Hi there, my husband is 55. We've been together 20 years and have 3 children. I think he's suffered with some sort of abdominal pain the whole time I've known him.  He's always been either constipated or had cramps and gas. He doesn't really moan and I suppose it's just become normal for him. Things changed recently and he's been having real discomfort that's kept him awake at night and persistent diarrhoea. He sent off a sample, they found blood and now they want to do a colonoscopy. He's been having pains all round his ribs and we've realised he's lost almost a stone since Christmas. I'm so so worried now and as I write this I can't believe we didn't get help sooner. I'm worried it's cancer and that it's potentially already spread. The waiting is awful. He has an interview on the 30th March to see if he's fit enough for the colonoscopy. It feels like ages away. Sorry I think I've posted this in the wrong section, it's my first post, not sure how things work yet

  • Hi Viv. Welcome to the forum.

Don't worry about posting to the wrong section - we all do it when we're new to the forum.

I'm not a doctor and I have no medical qualifications.

If your husband has had abdominal pains and other symptoms for a long time, it's possible he has an undiagnosed case of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).  This produces all manner of symptoms, but not usually blood.  Blood iin the stool is something that always needs to be checked, but there are a whole list of conditions that can cause this, and cancer is simply one possibility.  Don't assume that he automatically has cancer just because of the blood.

I know how difficult is the waiting, but there is plenty of reason to hope.  I would tell you not to worry, but I know from personal experience just how difficult that is.  It's the uncertainty that makes it difficult.  Once you know either way, it actually gets a little easier.

Best of luck to you and your hubby.

  • Thanks so much for your reply.

His GP had called to tell his his PSA level was raised, he wasn't too concerned but was giving him some options. That was when my husband told him about his bowel symptoms. The dr said it wasn't connected to his prostate but sounded like bowel cancer. I think that scared us both. Do you know how long it takes to get results from a Colonoscopy?

My business is closed because of COVID and now the kids are back to school I've got so much time on my hands to worry. Spending way too much time on the internet.

  • Quite possibly you'll get told the findings immediately after the colonoscopy. If they take biopsies (and they usually do) then there will a delay of several weeks before the results come through. It really depends on what they see when they do the procedure.

Blood in the stool nearly always triggers a referral for suspected cancer, and doctors are required to inform patients when they make a suspected cancer referral.  But in practice, most of those who get referred turn out NOT to have cancer so there's room for hope.

I suggest you stop Googling. It offer little in the way of comfort and generally it will make you feel worse, not better. The colonoscopy will find what it finds and nothing you do now will change that outcome. Googling will simply increase your stress.
