Opinions on PSA results. Should I be worried about referral?

Hi I am 60 had a routine blood test last week and PSA came back at 3O, have now been called to urology appointment at hospital within 2 weeks on 23/03. I am now really worried as everything seems to be happening fast, was at GP today he tried to reassure but advised it could be cancer. Has anyone had that reading and it not be cancer ?

  • Hello BigBoab

I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling anxious about your recent PSA results and the subsequent hospital referral.

The PSA test is a blood test to help detect prostate cancer. But it's not perfect and will not find all prostate cancers. A raised PSA level in your blood may be a sign of prostate cancer, but it can also be a sign of another condition that's not cancer, such as an enlarged prostate, prostatitis or even a urinary infection.

We know that this period of waiting for appointments and tests can be difficult for many people. It can help to talk things through and so if you'd like to chat to one of our nurses you can call them on 0808 800 4040 (Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm). I'm sure they will be happy to try and answer any questions you might have and offer some support.

Do let us know how you get on at your appointment.

    Best wishes,
