Bowel cancer

Hello, my grandad has been poorly for a good while and he has been back and forth from the drs. Firstly he was told over the phone it was piles when he rang to speak to the GP, but she didn't see him because of covid. He has been having more symptoms and rang again and the dr wanted to see him. She examined him and said she felt a growth in his colon/rectum and she said she was pretty sure it was cancer. He has a scan a week today and we are all really worried as he has been poorly for a while. What will he expect whilst he goes for the appointment? And can I please have anyone let me know what their experience was as I've read if symptoms show its most of the time too late? I really hope that's not the case! I'm trying to stay positive it's really hard not being able to see him either because of this virus. Thank you xx

  • Welcome to the forum Fizzydink although I'm sorry about your grandad's symptoms.

I'm not sure what type of scan your grandad will be having but if you have a look at this page on our website you'll see there are three possibilties. I hope this helps but if either of you would like to discuss this with our one of cancer nurses they'll be available next week on 0808 800 4040 between 9a.m - 5p.m.

Hopefully some of our members will share their experiences with you soon but in the meantime I want you to know we're thinking of you and hope all goes well at your grandad's appointment next week.

    Kind regards,

  • Hello Fizzydink,

the scans are a doddle, but really good in that they will provide a good insight into the site, scale and spread of any tumour, and indicate future treatment.l think you cannot generalise with regards to symptoms and future outcomes because it can be very individual, and speculation can be very pointless and stressful.Better to be assured that you will soon have definitive answers and rapid medical intervention if and as required.

l write this as a stage 4 bowel cancer with spread to the liver survivor ,7 years after the event, living a very full and active life,so you need to allow for the possibility that everything is on table currently, discount nothing, and work with the facts when they arrive.

l hope your grandfathers news turns out to be not as bleak as you dread,

                                                               David

  • Thanks so much. I'm glad to hear all is good, I'm praying he will
