Right itchy nipple

I have had a right itchy nipple for 2 months now and my gp referred me to the Breast Clinic where I was examined and I had a mammogram, ultrasound and chest X-ray but nothing was found. I don't have a rash but my nipple is slightly redder than usual. As nothing was found in the tests I was discharged back to my gp. I saw my gp again this week because the itching is getting worse and I asked her if I could be referred for a second opinion to a different Breast Clinic where I'm hoping they will carry out further tests ie a biopsy. I have now got the appointment for the second opinion to another Breast Clinic for 2 weeks time. Can anyone else relate to this where you have had tests and nothing was found. Just because I don't have a rash none of the doctors think there is anything to worry about but I'm really concerned.

  • Hi all

I've been on other forums on here but all are about lumps etc which I dont have my only real symptom is itchy nipples. Well at first it was both. I think it started maybe Nov/Dec time and was defintely both nipples. I wasnt at all concerned as I put it down to another result of menopause which I went straight into after the stress of losing my husband to cancer almost 3 years ago at the age of 46. The itching isnt persistent it comes and goes but when it comes it is intense. As I say it wasnt worrying me until on 11 Feb I noticed a tiny spot of discharge on the inside of my bra. Which immediately sent me spiralling and googling!!! . I went to gp who thoroughly examined me and found nothing she wasnt specially concerned but sent me for blood tests and referred me to breast clinic. Bloods (sugar, liver and kidney function and full blood count) have all come back clear which was a relief until I googled and it says they dont pick up breast cancer.!!! She also gave me hydrocortisone cream which did seem to help at first and I'd say now only the left gets itchy it's the left that had discharge and also now the skin of the areola on the left does seem slightly more raised. It's not red or inflamed, theres been a couple of pinhead sized bits of discharge but nothing much they may be from scratching, but google has convinced me I had pagets disease. I then googled again  and although I was relieved I hadnt found any lumps I'm now frantic that its inflammatory breast cancer. I am completely petrified I cant concentrate on anything I feel constantly sick at the thought of IBC. I have 2 kids who have been so brave since losing their dad but they couldnt deal with anything else and I dont know what would happen to them if I wasnt here as I've lost both parents too. .  My clinic appt is at last this Thursday 11th and it cant come quick enough but I'm dreading it at the same time. I so hope its nothing sinister I'm so so scared

  • Hi Jujumama,

I hope everything went OK at the breast clinic for you. Did they figure out what was going on? Hope you've been reassured.

  • Hi JuliaF

Thank you so much for thinking of me that was incredibly kind.

I'm delighted to say that I was diagnosed with nothing more than nipple eczema.

I can't tell you how relieved I am, I was utterly convinced that there was a more sinister cause of my issues.  It's not lost on me how very fortunate I am and I am so very thankful.

My experience at the clinic was excellent, everyone was so lovely and examinations and tests (mammogram and ultrasound) were thorough so I feel so reassured that there is nothing else to be concerned about.

If there is ever anything I can do to help or anyone ever wants to ask anything about my experience please get in touch. I wish you health, happiness and love. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

    Much love

    Jx

  • Oh that's great news! I'm sure you must be so relieved. I can only imagine how stressful it must have been for you - you've been through a lot and this hideous pandemic doesn't help either.

    Stay well and safe!

  • Hello,

I am reaching out to you as I am worried. I have dry, flaky skin on my right nipple. It was initially quite itchy, especially in bed at night. Then it became red as a result.   I was given a steroid cream, which I felt inflamed it quite a  bit. So I stopped. There was a little spot about 1cm on my aeroela, which was super dry to touch, but didn't always look red/dry. The last few days it's gotten really flaky again. It can be itchy at times - I feel it's connected to the types of food I eat but I don't want to be complacent. The doctor has prescribed me a stronger steroid and has ordered a swab to be taken of the tissue to rule out thrush. I'm honestly at my wits end - so worried. She said the next step is to arrange an app with the breast clinic. I can't cope with this at all. I'm 37, on oral contraceptives and never been pregnant, so I know these all make things trickier for me.

How long did you wait for apps/referrals and results?

    I'm really scared.
