I’m a bit concerned about my tonsils

Hi,

just wondering if anyone has had anything similar? I had covid on the 15th Jan 2021. I had symptoms like fatigue fever etc for about a week and a half but from the 29th January my fever stopped and I was fine. Then 4 days later on Tuesday 2nd February I woke up with a sore throat and fever, checked in the mirror and I can see what looks like a raspberry shaped lump attached to the skin next to my tonsil. I went to see the doctors who said they have no idea what it is and they've referred me to see a specialist on the 2 week cancer path which has scared the life out of me. I have an appointment next Wednesday but in the meantime just wondering if anyone has experienced the same? Not sure if it's something to worry about or just the after effects of covid? Thanks in advance

  • Hi Charmack. Welcome to the forum.

There are plenty of people on this forum who have recurrent throat problems which don't seem to be cancer.  I'm one of them.

I went through a series of tests for possible throat cancer two years ago - and it all came back negative.  Looking at my throat, I can see what looks like a red raw area (my tonsils were removed when I was 6).  I managed to take some photos (using a cheap £20 endoscope) and emailed them to my GP.  She says the area is lymphoid tissue and nothing to worry about.

Try not worry about the referral.  The ENT get many urgent referrals each day, and 9 out of 10 turn out not to be cancer.  Once they have you, they'll probably put you through the standard mill of an endoscopy up the nose, an MRI, and maybe even a biopsy under anaesthetic - I went through all of these and came out negative for cancer.

It might be worth buying a cheap endoscope with a USB plug for your computer.  You put it in your mouth and take a photo each day to see if it's getting bigger or smaller.  But don't assume that it's cancer until a specialist has done all the tests and tells you so.

  • Thank you so much for your lovely reply, it's really helped to put my mind at ease. I think where I've just been poorly with coronavirus, and now have found this it's just made me really panic about my health. I'm a worrier at the worst of times and this has just sent me over the edge. I think an endescope would help actually. Where can you buy an endoscope from, did you just look online? Thank you again, I really appreciate your reply, glad your tests all can back negative when you had them .

  • I bought the endoscope from Amazon (where else?).  It's a cheap piece of c--p but it's good enough for the job.  The only problems I had with it were I had to download another viewer program for my Macbook computer - and it didn't work at all with my Android pad.

With Amazon if something doesn't work you can return it within a certain time period, but since I managed to get it working on my Macbook I decided to keep it.

I don't recommend putting up your nose!  Just into your open mouth to take picture of the throat.  It should have integral LED lights, but they do get hot after a while so only turn them on when you need them.

I've also used it to look inside my new ukulele and check out the wiring for the integral amplifier!  Now the cat is keeping its distance!!!

  • Hi,

Back in March I had no smell or taste for 2 weeks, maybe lnoger..I didn't get tested for Covid-19 because at the time it wasn't a symptom. Since then my right tonsil has been enlarged/inflammed and I keep getting a reoccuring sore throat. I have had blood tests which have all come back clear. I have been on 3 different antibiotics, acid reflux and antifungal tablets. I have been to the dentist tiwce who have confirmed it isn't caused by my teeth.

I have an appointment with ENT on Friday, I just hope I can get some answers!
