Please somebody help, I’m absolutely petrified

Hi,

I don't know if this is the right place to post but I have diagnosed myself with a brain tumour. I don't have any headaches but I have other symptoms which are taking over my life. I'm 20 years old and il list my symptoms.
1) Floaters in eyes- for the last 5 years I have had several floaters in my eyes which the eye doctor can't explain, also strange eye pressure feeling.

2)Weird spaced out/faint feeling-  I'm aware of my surroundings but sometimes it feels as though I'm not all there if that makes sense, sort of like how you feel in a dream. I've experienced this since I was 13 and convinced myself it's due to a slow growing tumour.

3) Fatigue/ Tiredness- I'm always so tired and lack energy

4) Slight forgetfulness-  The other day I went to make myself a cup of tea, however after making it I realised I didn't boil the kettle, I also seem to lose my keys a lot recently too.

5) Anxiety- I suffer from anxiety which I also read was a symptom

If any one could give me advice, it really would be appreciated. I feel completely alone and find myself planning my funeral at night. I've not made any new plans recently as in my head il either be getting treatment or not here anymore. I'm so upset. Thanks for reading this far.  Beth

  • Hi Beth. Welcome to the forum.

I'm not a doctor and I have no medical qualifications.

I've just been on the NHS website for brain tumours and they list the following symptoms:

        - headaches
        - seizures (fits)
        - persistently feeling sick (nausea), being sick (vomiting)
        - drowsiness
        - mental or behavioural changes, such as memory problems or changes in personality
        - progressive weakness or paralysis on one side of the body
        - vision or speech problems

You specifically say you don't have headaches, and you don't mention fits, nausea, paralysis, or speech problems.  Floaters are bits of rubbish inside the eye and would have nothing to do with vision problems caused by a brain tumour (I also recall having floaters when I was a teenager).

Once you eliminate the symptoms you don't have, the ones that remain could have any number of possible causes, but I doubt that any doctor would put brain tumour at the top of the list.  Dizziness could be caused by low blood pressure, anaemia, a viral infection, or anxiety. Anxiety could also be causing your tiredness and forgetfulness; it can also cause the feeling of derealisation you mention.

Right now, anxiety is a serious problem in the UK as people struggle to come to terms with the pandemic; since you're also convinced you've got a serious health problem then I would expect your panic levels to be through the roof, and this is putting you into a vicious cycle of anxiety causing symptoms which increase your anxiety.

I notice from your post that you haven't discussed your symptoms with your GP.  I think you need to stop reading Google and discuss your situation with your doctor.  It might help to put everything in a note so you don't miss anything out. The earlier you make an appointment, the sooner you can start sorting out your problems and the sooner you'll begin to enjoy life again.

  • Hi Telemando,

Thankyou so much for your reply, you have really helped put my mind at ease as I was getting myself extremely worked up tonight. From the symptoms on the nhs site , I only seem to have 1 or 2 which does make me feel a lot better about the situation. In regards to anxiety, I have been suffering really bad recently (mainly health anxiety) so I suppose this could trigger some symptoms. I am going to book a GP appointment tomorrow like you said and again Thankyou for taking the time to reply :) Beth

  • Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad I could help. It's one reason why this forum exists. Bye for now.

  • Hi, I had all of those symptoms (and more) , particularly the memory loss, plus I had vibrations and tremors, balance issues, numbness etc and turns out I had a severe Vitamin b12 deficiency. I started injections and the symptoms have gone but I have to have them for life as it's suspected nerve damage caused by the deficiency and my symtoms will return if I don't have injections. Please ask GP to check your b12, as well as your folate levels. I have seen a neurologist previously and had brain and spine MRI and was all clear. I am sure you will be fine. Even Anxiety and chronic stress can cause all of your symptoms . I also have fibromyalgia which causes a lot of neuro type symptoms. Take care x

  • Hi Butterfly1987,

Thanks for your reply! I will definitely ask my doctor about this too. Funnily enough I do also get mild numbness and tingling which I have had for years so definitely could be a possibility. I'm really hoping it turns out to be something like this rather than a tumour. Thanks again! Beth Xx

    Hi Beth,

This is the problem with an internet diagnosis - it can scare the pants off us!

There are a number of different and far less serious reasons for the symptoms you describe. I hope that you do make an appointment with your GP tomorrow and, that s/he can put your mind to rest.

Do please let us know how you get on. We are always here for you.

    Kind regards,

    Jolamine xx

  • Hi Jolamine,

Thankyou for your reply! I have a phone consultation on Friday morning, so feeling slightly better already. It's good to know I'm not alone, thanks again for taking the time to reply. Beth Xx

  • Hi Beth,

Not much advice I can offer but I can tell you that I am in a very similar position to you. I am also convinced there's something really wrong with my brain. Like you, I've also been experiencing vision problems (floaters, shadowing when I read subtitles against a dark background, brief afterimages) for a while, around 4-5 years. I was concerned about these problems when they first started but was only 17 with a fear of going to the doctors in case of a bad diagnosis so just avoided them and forgot about them and they never bothered me until recently when I started looking at brain tumours again. I haven't booked a GP appointment but have booked opticians which should hopefully shed some light. So I just want you to know that everything you're feeling right now I'm feeling too. Good luck for your appointment on Friday and please do keep us updated! Xx

  • Hi seeingstars!

sorry to hear that your also going through this too, it's so draining! I had my appointment last week and they weren't concerned at all and put it down to anxiety, however I also can't shake the feeling that something is wrong. I'm thinking of getting a private mri which I'm putting off, as I really don't want bad news. I also have shadowing too and afterimage :(  I can't tell if I'm creating symptoms in my head but I could swear my face muscles have gotton weaker too. Lmk if there are any updates on your condition and I hope yours turns out to be nothing serious! Xxx
