Uretha bleeding worried about cancer

It's taken a lot for me to post on here and I know there are people out there who have been diagnosed so apologies if this offends. For the last 2 weeks I have had bleeding from my uretha. I am a 27 year old female, with no history of bladder cancer however on my mother side we have the breast cancer gene. I had a smear on the 2nd of December which came back clear however since the smear, I have had discomfort with the downstairs furniture. 2 weeks ago i went to the drs as i was urinating often and had some blood. I then was on macrobid for 3 days. This did nothing. Back to the drs i went a week later and was perscribed the same again for 3 days. On Xmas eve, i noticed heavier bleeding from the uretha and went to the emergency gp. He didnt really know what was wrong and said there was blood in my urine. He put me on a 21 tablet course of antibitoics but i am 10 tablets in and bleeding still after I urinate and have seen little clots in my urine. I of course googled and can see my symptoms very similar to Uretha Cancer. I have been in tears for 2 weeks pretty much and waiting to hear from the Dr again. Has anyone experienced anything similar or can give me some advice. I start my new job on the 11th of Jan, I am in bits thinking it could be serious.

  • Welcome to the forum Hannah although I'm sorry to read what's going on and for the worry your symptoms are causing.

Hopefully some of our members who have been in similar situations will share their exepriences and advice with you soon but in the meantime do try to finish the course of antibiotics you've been given and see what the doctor says the next course of action will be.

I can't begin to imagine how stressful this situation must be for you, especially with the start of your new job on the horizon, but fingers crossed the doctor can figure out what's going on and give you some answers and peace of mind soon.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi HannahLF. Welcome to the forum.

I should start out by saying that I'm not a doctor and I have no medical qualifications.

Urethral cancer is really rare, and at your age, so is bladder cancer; somewhere in the region of 1 or 2 per million chance.  That does mean that the doctors will be looking for some other cause for your distressing symptoms, with infection being a strong possibility.

I wouldn't panic just yet about the antibiotics not working: 10 tablets could well be too soon to see results, particularly if the urethra has raw areas that have yet to heal.  I'd finish the course of tablets and then revisit the doctor for a check up.  Unfortunately, antibiotic resistance is an increasing problem, so even if these tablets don't work, it's still possible that a different antibiotic will.

If your GP is unable to control your condition then I think it's reasonable to ask for a referral to  a hospital urology specialist.
