Prostrate cancer diagnosis

Hi there

my otherwise healthy partner had a PSA test because he was having difficulty peeing. It's come back at over 100. We are both absolutely terrified that it has spread, even though he has no other symptoms and now have the dreaded 2 week wait before we find out more. He also had a DRE examination and his prostrate is definitely enlarged. I wish I could find some hope for a good outcome but it's looking pretty bleak.

  • Hi rrworkshop.

Please don't think 100 is the end , My PSA was 1581 i was diagnosed Feb 2016 mine is prostate gone to lymph nodes spine ribs pelvis and a lung I was still working, metal fabrication and welding carrying steel plate and plenty exercise till two years ago, I'm now the official carer for my darling wife she has Parkinson's and Altzimers, My PSA still changes now and again, but I'm still fit and feeling good, keeping positive and fighting is the main thing looking after the wife helps alot keeps me busy.

Good luck and best wishes for you both for the future.

    Billy

  • Thanks so much for your reply, it's given me hope. MRI scan Tuesday so will report back. We're both trying to keep positive.

  • Hi Rachel.

I come on forum quite regularly to see if I can help others with similar problems to me when I say similar I don't mean your husband's cancer has spread out side the prostate, there's still a chance it's still contained but even IF it has spread their are still treatment options.

I know things seem very slow moving and they are but try to keep busy something to occupy you always helps.

Best wishes for the future for you both.

    Billy

  • Hi Billy,

I can't tell you what a relief it is just to be able to talk to someone. We took a long walk today and actually managed to forget about it for a couple of hours. One more day to get through and then whatever it is we have to face we will face it together. Luckily we have really supportive families. The awful thing is that my ex-husband died of pancreatic cancer 7 years ago and the thought of putting my girls through it all again is killing me. I guess it's just small steps and I've got to stop thinking too far ahead. I'm so glad to hear you're doing ok.

    Best wishes,

    Hi there

Just to give you an update. His MRI scan came back and it is definitely prostate cancer. they haven't yet said if it's spread (and he didn't dare ask), but he's got an appointment with the consultant Urologist on Dec 9th followed by a Biopsy on December 17th. All this waiting is a bit agonising, but we actually both feel a bit better now we know what we are dealing with. I just wish we knew whether it had spread but we will I guess have more indication the the 9th as by then he will have had a CT scan and a Nuclear Bone Scan.

    Best,

    Rachel

  • Hi Rachel when he has bone scan make sure he has plenty to eat and drink with him, maybe a book .unless he can get home don't know if you noticed it warns after injection to keep clear of pregnant women and young children, hospitals do have a special Room where he can wait till scan time with other people having same done .scan Room can be cold trying to lay still for 25mins and not shiver make sure plenty of thick clothes nothing metallic like belt buckle and suchlike.buttons on jeans .

    Very boring time

    Best wishes

  • Hi there, just to update you, we've had the final diagnosis. his PSA was actually 177 and Gleason score of 9. it has spread to distant lymph nodes but not bones or organs. He feels fine and fit and just can't quite belive there is anyting wrong with him. he started hormone treatment today and chemo in a couple of weeks. he's also been forward for a new clinical trial called 'Atlanta'. i just keep scaring myself by looking at life expectancy for someone with his high a gleason grade and PSA, it doesn't look good at all, and the doctors wouldn't really commit to how long they could keep him going.

    Best,

  • Hello , I just wondered how things are looking for you now ?  My dad has just found out he has it his psa is 500 the Dr has given him hormone tablets , but he has to have a biopsy as they think it has spread because he is in alot of pain they think it's in his bones and poss lymph nodes. He is having a good day today but could be due to all the pain relief meds . The doctors said to him you know this is bad don't you and you know what this means . Although I'm not sure I do
