Unexplained lump above collarbone

Hi everyone,

I hope this post is okay, I'm not sure what's wrong with me and I don't want to offend those who have been diagnosed but I'm so anxious right now. I'm 20 years old, and I'm at university right now. About 4.5 weeks ago, I found a small lump above my collarbone on the left side. It feels about 1cm and is oval shaped, smooth and I can move it around easily. I noticed it the day after I had a flu jab so just thought it as an effect of that. It hadn't gone away in a week so I phoned the GP and they agreed to phone in three weeks. Three weeks later and it was still there, they ordered some bloods which all came back clear. They've referred me for an ultrasound after examining it - he said it felt like a lymph node and that from feeling it there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I just keep jumping to the worst conclusions and thinking that I have lymphoma, because I've had really bad fatigue for the past few months. I had glandular fever in summer 2019, and I'm so scared that it could have caused lymphoma. So sorry for the ramble, I just don't know what else it could be apart from that.

  • Just keep off google mate. I can save you the bother & say you'll stress yourself to bits.

Just remember Google etc work on trying to find you the best hits from the most impactful (and therefore as it sees it...useful) sources. For lumps etc that means horror stories & frankly worded medical sites. But remember it is selecting FOR that.

I'm guessing by fact you found us lot you are digging, as we all were. But be reassured this lump business seems not uncommon.

I'm 5 weeks in. Def shrinking but also def still there if I go rummaging. Ultrasound on 12th June non urgent case. Bloods fine.

  • Hi everyone, first post!

So glad I found this chat after some terrifying googling!  37 yr old female, had COVID vaccine on 18th May (Moderna, 1st jab) very next day happened to notice a lump above collar bone on left side.  Left it for a week and visited GP Weds 26th May - she confirmed it is a swollen lymph node and reassured me she didn't think it was serious, however, she asked the nurse to do bloods there and then and referred me for US which I'm waiting for a date for (she said it would be within 2 weeks).  Bloods all came back normal, lump is around the size of a butter bean, movable, was tender but not anymore.  Doctor dismissed any links to COVID vaccine (I asked if it could be that having read about possible side effect online).  Like everyone I have myself worried sick, have an almost 3 year old and just keep imagining the worst but I'm reassured to read similar stories (with positive outcomes) on here.  Just willing the US date to come through, suffer with anxiety and I can't focus on anything else!

  • Hello

I am the same. Mine was tender, not anymore. It has reduced but still there, just above my collarbone. I am post vaccine 5 weeks.

My GP dismissed it too and said the vaccine wouldn't cause it, it was the puncture of the skin BUT I think that is because it isn't considered as a side effect here like it is elsewhere. It is all too coincidental but of course any bump should be checked.

I have my ultrasound tomorrow so hoping I can let people know all is OK.

  • Great that you have your ultrasound tomorrow, hope it brings some reassurance for you!  Let us know how you get on.

I am being told by family and friends that I'm being silly, but you can't help but wonder!

Now I have found this post with similar experiences I have promised myself no more googling and I need to try not to prod it as often and just keep an eye on it.

I noticed it literally the day after my vaccine, had it 9.30am on the Tues and noticed it afternoon of the Weds - not to say it wasn't there longer but surely I would have noticed it as I wasn't purposely looking I just touched my neck while sitting at my desk at work and felt it!

Seems to be a lot of people with same experience after vaccine, it makes sense and hopefully we will all get peace of mind soon!

Wonder if you get any answers straight away from your US or if you have to wait.

  • I did get an opinion straight away at the ultrasound scan.

  • Good afternoon all

I wanted to update you all following my ultrasound appt this morning.  Will give a bit of background that I have added in previous posts but not expecting anyone to remember it!

I had my first AZ just over 5 weeks ago today, about 2 days after I noticed a lump just above my collarbone, almost hanging over it a bit.  Of course I was alarmed so called the GP and he sent me for a referall ultrasound.  Fast forward today, the lump is still there, has shrunk but I can find it easily.

The sonographer said it was nothing to worry about and it was only 4mm when it feels a lot bigger, I guess skin makes it feel bigger and anything else that covers it.  He said that they are seeing more and more cases of this, sometimes in the same area, sometimes in the armpit, sometimes on the shoulder even, the wave of relief was immense.

So, I hope my post brings some kind of hope, relief, assurance in that I am 5+ weeks down the line and still have mine, it is moveable and it is there but nothing to worry about. Of course anything should be checked out and please do get things checked.  He said I could have it 5 weeks or 5 months! and that my body is doing what it should and reacting to the vaccine.

    Hope that helps

    Natalie xx

  • Oh I'm so pleased for you that you've had some reassurance that is amazing news, I know my Doctors exact words were "90% of the time this is related to infections etc and be rest assured I don't think it's anything serious" (due to it initially being tender) but the fact they then refer you for bloods, scans etc "just to be sure" adds a seed of doubt.  It's so good to hear all the positive outcomes on this feed and to read about people in the same position.

I looked again at my info sheet I got when I got my Jab, the moderna, and swelling of the glands in the armpit is actually listed on there but not in the neck/collarbone.  Maybe just not well reported yet.

Congrats on your great news you will get a good night's sleep now!

  • Hello

I really do think that because it is a new vaccine even the docs are not aware of all of the side effects that it can cause.

My GP said it wasn't the vaccine causing it but more that the needle puncturing the skin but the side effects listed if you search for them say it can be this. I really just think because it is new.

The sonographer said more recently they are getting lots of these and it might be for the collarbone, or for the armpit or the shoulder. I've just had a B12 injection at the docs and I was telling the nurse and she said oh I have never heard of that so it is all up in the air really!

I have reported my gland on the yellow card scheme as I want people to feel reassured if it is vaccine related, of course best to get checked.

I swear though that it feels at least 1cm but he said it was 4mm? It was about 10cm on the screen ha!
