Unexplained lump above collarbone

Hi everyone,

I hope this post is okay, I'm not sure what's wrong with me and I don't want to offend those who have been diagnosed but I'm so anxious right now. I'm 20 years old, and I'm at university right now. About 4.5 weeks ago, I found a small lump above my collarbone on the left side. It feels about 1cm and is oval shaped, smooth and I can move it around easily. I noticed it the day after I had a flu jab so just thought it as an effect of that. It hadn't gone away in a week so I phoned the GP and they agreed to phone in three weeks. Three weeks later and it was still there, they ordered some bloods which all came back clear. They've referred me for an ultrasound after examining it - he said it felt like a lymph node and that from feeling it there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I just keep jumping to the worst conclusions and thinking that I have lymphoma, because I've had really bad fatigue for the past few months. I had glandular fever in summer 2019, and I'm so scared that it could have caused lymphoma. So sorry for the ramble, I just don't know what else it could be apart from that.

  • So reassuring to chat with other people this is happening to.

  • Thanks for the replies!

Yes definitely reassuring, it does very much sound like an under reported side effect. I have to admit I can't leave the thing alone...

Mine is still there & whilst I wouldn't say its getting any smaller it seems to have "softened" a little.

I do suffer health anxiety & this just caught me at a bad time I think.

I spent a few quid on an online doctor who dismissed it completely & said might take months but forget about it unless it gets larger. His point was that in some skinny folk (me) you can notice even the tiniest node.

Hopefully posts on here help anyone reading them.

  • Hello all, on Saturday 24th of April I had the AZ jab felt fine but on Monday I noticed I had swelling on the left side of collarbone, it was tender and was about half an inch in size I had my jab on my left so I thought it was because of that. I used a heat pad for a week and now I can hardly feel anything it has gone right down so I thought I would say my experience.

  • Hi,

Thought best to consult doc today on this & no concern. Panicked myself a bit this morning as woke up in a right sweat.

Doc not concerned at all re lump & thinks def vaccine related. She seemed less concerned when I said where it was (about 2 finger widths up from collarbone & almoat next to trapezium muscle). Mentioned sweat & her comment was unless it is regular, significant & waking you up it's not connected.

So a case of leave it 2-3 weeks & call back if no change and call earlier if grows. I'm sure it'll be fine & I just need to chill a bit. There are a few published articles on neck & collarbone lumps post vaccine that last for varied time & look odd even on ultrasound. Seems that RNA vaccines like Moderna or Pfizer are strong & can cause lumps. I think this is just unfortunate that it just looks so much like something sinister.

Been a super stressful time recently for me & I think this just was something extra I didn't need hence fretting. Hope all your issues are sorting themselves out.

  • Hi,

Hope you are all doing ok. I saw a doc yesterday who had a good feel. Paid for a private one as NHS only doing tele consults. Lump looks more like cervical lymph vs supra clavicular.

Reassuring news is he rated it as 1-1.5cm & definitely soft/obviously mobile. I've felt no change since it appeared. Wording was "likely benign" but advised full blood count & ultrasound if not gone or reducing in 2 weeks. So I'm reassured by that but would just like to see it gone.

Will be 2 weeks since I found it on Monday. Some of you are upwards of 4-5 weeks right?

  • Hello,

I have an ultrasound booked for 01 June. I am 2 weeks post vaccine and I think today I have noticed it is shrinking? I am trying so hard not to keep touching it and I think that also helps?

I was looking on Twitter and there are lots of people who have something like this believed to be vaccine related. Seems US are reporting on this quite a lot.

But of course better to get checked out, when I found mine the GP said there was no point in him seeing me as he will just say I have a lump, I spoke to another who wanted to see me and thinks it is vaccine related.

    best wishes to all

  • You know how I'd best describe mine? Like one of those air filled packaging things you can pop. Imagine one of those under skin on neck 2in above collar bone. Really wierd. It was the location that freaked me out.

Hope your ultrasound goes ok. I'm sure it will.

Common opinion seems to be that touching it constantly won't help it. My GP yesterday alao said that if you check every 5 min it is tricky to assess if it is same or not. Mind playing tricks etc. He said hands off for at least a few days.

  • That is a good comparison. Mine was like a baked bean or kidney bean and like it was attached to a string so it could move around with a limit! But today it has really gone down. I of course haven't pushed it too far.

mine hangs over on to my collarbone, but as it is getting smaller it is moving more above it.

I also think standing under the shower with the warm water has helped.

I don't know whether to still have my scan if it decreases anymore? Part of me would still like it checked...

  • How long did it take after jab to go down? Mine is 2 weeks since jab now & 10d aince noticed lump.

  • I noticed it 2 days after my jab and it has been 2 weeks since my vaccine.

I still have it but it has only just started getting smaller.

I had a cousin who had her jab but didn't have the lymph node swelling until 2 weeks after.
