Unexplained lump above collarbone

Hi everyone,

I hope this post is okay, I'm not sure what's wrong with me and I don't want to offend those who have been diagnosed but I'm so anxious right now. I'm 20 years old, and I'm at university right now. About 4.5 weeks ago, I found a small lump above my collarbone on the left side. It feels about 1cm and is oval shaped, smooth and I can move it around easily. I noticed it the day after I had a flu jab so just thought it as an effect of that. It hadn't gone away in a week so I phoned the GP and they agreed to phone in three weeks. Three weeks later and it was still there, they ordered some bloods which all came back clear. They've referred me for an ultrasound after examining it - he said it felt like a lymph node and that from feeling it there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I just keep jumping to the worst conclusions and thinking that I have lymphoma, because I've had really bad fatigue for the past few months. I had glandular fever in summer 2019, and I'm so scared that it could have caused lymphoma. So sorry for the ramble, I just don't know what else it could be apart from that.

  • I'm so glad I found this post. I had my second moderna vaccine earlier with also 2 failed blood tests in the same arm a few hours later, tonight now I have found a sore lump above my collarbone which I can move, when I first felt it, the blood in my body rushed to my toes as my mum is awaiting a mastectomy in 3 weeks after having a lumpectomy and lymph node removal in April, so you can all imagine the thoughts that zoomed through my head. The lump is on my left side same side as my vaccine, so glad it's not just me who's had these symptoms, seems to be a swollen gland issue from the jab I've read a lot of articles uk and us about swollen lymph nodes being a. Problem, I've been put at ease for tonight now. Going to keep en eye on it, but glad that it's more than likely a vaccine side effect x

  • Hey everyone, reply to my above post, I phoned gp when I woke up this morning as the lump had gotten bigger overnight, before I even said anything he said its 99% likely swollen lymph nodes due to the vaccine, he said to keep an eye, take regular pain killers and to Come back in a week if it hasn't gone, or go back sooner if I'm vomiting with a temp, feel more at ease now

  • Hi everyone,

Being a cancer patient I was  worried when I found a pea sized lump on my breast bone, the day after my second AZ jab. I had read the reports about a possible relationship to the jab but I was anxious in case it was the melanoma that had returned again. My consultant saw me 3 weeks later & was unsure about it so he did a fine needle aspiration and sent it off to histology. The results took 3 weeks and in that time the lump has been slowly decreasing in size.

The results were - inconclusive - so it isn't cancer but he's pretty sure it's vaccine related. If the lump hasn't completely disappeared in another 3 months he is going to remove it but it will leave an unsightly scar above my cleavage because it's on the breast bone. So I'm hoping it disappears on it's own.

So take heart everyone - get them checked out but in almost all cases it will be vaccine related. It also means that your immune system is strong & doing it's job properly - trying to eliminate the invader in your body!

  • Hi all,

Feeling releived to have somewhere to share my story (this is my first post)- and it has been really comforting to read much of this thread.

On June 13th (5 days after getting my Pfizer vacinne on my left side) I woke up with a sore neck (left side) and was massaging my neck when I found a supraclavicular lump. I went straight to the GP and was told to come back in a week. At this stage, I wasn't too worried as had read this thread and research online re vacinne related lymphadenopathy. One week later I was referred for an ultrasound and bloods. I was also experiencing really mild shortness of breath at this stage.

I ended up going to a new (more supportive) GP and she was worried about pre-embolism and sent me to the emergency department where they did a chest x-ray and more bloods (and a COVID test). The doctor at the hospital dismissed my claims that the lump might be vacinne related and told me several times he thinks they are unrelated (before seeing any of my results). My COVID test came back negative, my chest x-ray came back clear, and my bloods came back normal. However, they were concerned with my ultrasound as they had found 4-5 englarged nodes, with the biggest one (that I can feel) of 10mm diameter and with loss of fatty hilum (which I understand can be an indication of cancer).

Since then I have had a fine needle aspiration and I have an appointment with a haematologist in four days to hopefully discuss my results. It's worth noting that I am close to certain that the largest node shrunk quite considerably between discovery and when I got my biopsy. It is rubbery and mobile. My shortness of breath seems somewhat reduced, however I now experience pain and soreness randomly throughout my neck and shoulders predominantly, and today a random stabbing pain in my right breast.

This time has been agonisingly terrifying for me (after having lost many family members to cancer) and so I can only assume that many of my other "symptoms" are possibly anxiety related.

I am sorry for this very long-winded explanation. I guess I am just hoping to hear from any others who might have had concerning ultrasound results but went on to find out that it was not due to something more insidious.

  • Just an update from me as I was one of original posters. Hopefully some reassurance for everyone...

    1. First Moderna jab in may & lump on neck 1 inch above collarbone. 1cm & movable & painless.

    2. Went to GP after 4 weeks. Bloods normal & referred for ultrasound, also normal.

    3. After about 11 weeks it was almost gone.

    4. 2nd jab yesterday & I'm rough as hell....and guess what...same node up to size of an olive.

So definitely the vaccine. I was beside myself with worry first time but not this time as this is clearly a vaccine effect.

So wierd that reappearance reassures but it is clearly the jab. Was non-existent on Thu, had jab Fri & larger than it was in first place on Sat.

  • Did you have your second jab on the same side? I went for my second AZ last weekend and explained to the doctor administering it about my lymph node. He recommended getting it on the opposite side to original jab (and node) which I did.

I was really rough with first jab and I have had hardly any side effects with the second, just a sore arm. Lymph node hasnt gotten any bigger either.

    Will see how it goes.

  • I asked for the othet arm but nurse advised same as is my left (I am right handed). Gland is sore this time (wasn't at all last time) but seems to not be getting any larger.

It took about 10 weeks after first jab to drop to a size where I had to fish about a bit to feel it, so it does take time. This second dose might even take longer. But it's exactly the same node so seems clear that's where the immune action is...

  • Weird how we got different advice re: arms. The doc giving the jabs acknowledged it was a vaccine reaction and said giving it in opposite arm would hopefully no aggravate it.

He seems to be right so far and your experience confirms doing it in the same arm does aggravate it.

I am coming up for 11 weeks this week so hopefully it will just keep going down, it's pretty tiny now.

    Good luck with yours!

  • Yep it flew up within hours & is quite sore. But I'll take that over the anxiety of first time....!

  • Hi,

I have been following this post for a while. Here is my experience. I received my 1st moderna jab at the start of June and one day about 2 weeks later, I rubbed my collarbone (which I don't tend to do) and I found a lump on the same side as I had the vaccine. This is the size of a small grape, easily moveable and non painful.

Panic set in straight away and decided to research and came across this page as well as vaccine side effect groups on social media. All with the same experience due to the vaccine. I feel like if it is a lymph node that it has decreased in size slightly but that may be just wishful thinking.

This morning I wanted to feel the other side of my neck and I felt what seems to be a lymph node but just what I would class as a normal size and not enlarged. Obviously this has worried me again and hopefully it's a side effect of the vaccine or because I recently caught coronavirus after my 1st jab and I have heard infections can cause swollen lymph nodes. It could even be just some visceral fat I am unsure.

Doctors won't do face to face appointments so I have to explain over the phone. Hopefully I get some answers too as it's causing me to much anxiety and stress.
