Unexplained lump above collarbone

Hi everyone,

I hope this post is okay, I'm not sure what's wrong with me and I don't want to offend those who have been diagnosed but I'm so anxious right now. I'm 20 years old, and I'm at university right now. About 4.5 weeks ago, I found a small lump above my collarbone on the left side. It feels about 1cm and is oval shaped, smooth and I can move it around easily. I noticed it the day after I had a flu jab so just thought it as an effect of that. It hadn't gone away in a week so I phoned the GP and they agreed to phone in three weeks. Three weeks later and it was still there, they ordered some bloods which all came back clear. They've referred me for an ultrasound after examining it - he said it felt like a lymph node and that from feeling it there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I just keep jumping to the worst conclusions and thinking that I have lymphoma, because I've had really bad fatigue for the past few months. I had glandular fever in summer 2019, and I'm so scared that it could have caused lymphoma. So sorry for the ramble, I just don't know what else it could be apart from that.

  • Sorry for the long post.

Had GP appointment 1/4/21 because of a lump I found above my collar bone (after having 2nd pfizer vac). They said its a swollen right supraclavicular lymph node but wanted me to try antibiotics and have bloods done before sending me for a scan. Got home and rang for bloods appointment but couldn't get me in for 2 weeks. then had a voicemail from gp asking me to go back that day for further examination with her and another gp. They did bloods, breast, tummy and rectal examination. They referred me for a chest xray and ultra sound scan.

Bloods came back clear apart from a folate deficiency for which I'm now taking folic acid. I had ultra sound which confirmed a lymph node, chest xray was clear. GP then referred me to ENT, had telephone consultation but he didn't feel the need for head and neck CT.

My GP is concerned because of bone and muscle pain and 2 ½ stone weight loss in 12 months without trying.

GP has done further blood tests and has referred me to something called ACE pathway (The ACE pathway is in place for those who require urgent investigations of non-specific or vague symptoms because of the possibility of cancer or another serious illness. All the investigations are carried out as soon as possible without the need for admission to hospital)

I've seen my most recent blood tests online and can see that one test - Serum total 25-hydroxy vitamin D level is very low.  I have a follow up appointment with GP on Thursday so may start treatment for Vit D deficiency, then to await the ACE referral.

I am still hopeful that it is a result of vaccine and the other things are just incidental findings but I have to say my GP has been excellent.

P.S lump is still there but has definitely halved in size.

    Fingers crossed for everyone.

Hi, I had my first vaccine (Pfizer) in January and I noticed a swollen lymph node a day later which was slightly tender and very hard and big, it then started to go down slightly but never went away I went to my GP a few times who tired to reassure me but I was very anxious so they said they would send me for a US of my left armpit but the wait would be 8-10 weeks. I decided to pay privately to go to a breast clinic on 23rd Feb and was told it was 6x3mm and appeared normal and was told not to worry. I then had my second vaccine in March and again the lump became very hard, bigger and slightly tender after it then went down again but not fully. My nhs appointment came through which was 27th April and they said it was slightly enlarged just over 5mm but looked normal. It's still there now and it's been 17 weeks since my first vaccine and 8 weeks since my second!
i know it's terrible but still can't help but worry!

  • Hello

I can relate to this anxiety but take some comfort you've had it checked twice and both have said it looks normal and it is since you had your vaccine, both times.

I am also wracking my mind wondering if it was there pre-vaccine but I am sure I would have noticed but I still wonder what if. It's very coincidental!

I have mine just above my collarbone, 4 weeks on Sunday since I had my first vaccine, I am curious to get the other vaccine in my other arm to see if it happens.

I can totally relate but try not to stress,

  • Agree. I can still feel mine quite easily but I reckon if I went to docs now I would have to direct them to it. It is def still there, def still palpable but it feels far more part of the tissue underneath it that it did.

If I had the lump that I have now pre-vaccine I would never have felt it. Was purely because I had a sore neck that I felt the area & it was obvious.

Thinking really logically about it, which I have tried to do...

    1. Most of us noticed lumps after vaccine.

    2. All (I think) are on same side.

    3. Most are collarbone I think with me a bit higher, but all areas are documented in vaccines.

    4. Most on here seem to see some sort of very slow resolution after 4 weeks (??) but everyone seems to be saying don't expect it to disappear one day.

    5. Some people seem to say they have had lumps for far longer with scans to say all ok.

    6. Some have said that it can feel different depending how you prod it.

    7. Some have given solid adcive of leave it well alone as docs have said that might keep it up & therefore be vicious circle.

In total openness as a quite bad health anxiety sufferer...

    1. Vaccine Fri 23 Apr

    2. Felt lump following Tue

    3. Started googling it & saw all sorts of links to lymphoma etc.

    4. Left it about 10 days, rang docs & no concern whatsoever.

    5. Pushed to get it actually felt & doc noted odd location, said likely nothing but get bloods as felt like just >1cm. Referred to non urgent ultrasound.

    6. Bloods fine.

    7. Round about Fr 14th May def noticed it was sort of fading into the neck tissues a bit. You couldn't see it in mirror anymore.

    8. Today I can still feel it but need to poke a bit. Much flatter & seems to take shrunk in diameter maybe 1/3?

  • Very good post, summarising why we should all be calm!

  • Hi,

I have two enlarged lymph nodes under my arm/armpit, after two biopsies I'm still no nearer on finding out what is causing them, however I wanted to post an update in case it helps anyone.

I don't really know if mine started before or after the covid jab, however I'm now 14 weeks passed the first jab, when I mentioned this to the breast clinic they said it's entirely possible to have lymph nodes enlarged for this amount of time following something like that and they are seeing more and more people coming in with them following the vaccine & they are even showing up as take up on pet scans.

Of course when your in the middle of it all and having a history of two cancers one of which was in the lymph nodes it does nothing to calm my panic, I think I might be more reassured if I knew for sure they had popped up after the jab.

Just thought I'd post for anyone who has longer term node swellings. Hope everyone is coping ok.

  • This is very reassuring, thank you :-)

  • Mine is very similar to everyone else on here - 4 days after first Pfizer noticed a little tenderness and swelling, couple of days later it's about marble sized and movable but rubbery. Have appointment to see gp tomorrow - she was fairly confident it will be either in relation to the vaccine (same side) or a bit of a tummy bug going around my family, but wanted to have a feel for herself for my peace of mind.

In itself it has triggered my post natal anxiety - I have two kids aged 11 months and 3 years, after the first one I had bad health anxiety which I had managed to stay calm about until now. Now I am looking at my kids imagining them growing up without me and nearly bursting into tears. Obviously I am very hopeful the lump will be nothing, hoping I can keep it all in perspective too! This thread has helped immensely in helping me feel calm in all your shared experiences, which really do make sense!

My only other symptom is being very thirsty - but I'm also breastfeeding a hungry 11 month who isn't keen on eating much solid food, so this isn't the first time I've got dry lips and thirsty recently.

  • Hi, thanks for the reply! So have you had you biopsy results? Bless you I bet you have been panicked but at least they don't think it's anything and just related to the vaccine!

hopefully they go down someday I do have a review in 3 months, I have had covid in 2020 and felt really unwell the day after my vaccine and I've read this can cause a stronger immune repsonse? So maybe it's linked. Hopefully they settle for us all!

  • Dear Melaniejo

Just read your post. Hope all is going OK for you. This group has been very reassuring regarding our swollen lymph nodes following the covid jabs. Mine took 5 weeks to resolve and was very worrying.

I hope you get on OK with your tests and will keep my fingers crossed for you that all is OK. As someone who suffers from terrible health anxiety I can really relate to what you are going through. Please keep us informed of how you get on.

    Best regards
