Unexplained lump above collarbone

Hi everyone,

I hope this post is okay, I'm not sure what's wrong with me and I don't want to offend those who have been diagnosed but I'm so anxious right now. I'm 20 years old, and I'm at university right now. About 4.5 weeks ago, I found a small lump above my collarbone on the left side. It feels about 1cm and is oval shaped, smooth and I can move it around easily. I noticed it the day after I had a flu jab so just thought it as an effect of that. It hadn't gone away in a week so I phoned the GP and they agreed to phone in three weeks. Three weeks later and it was still there, they ordered some bloods which all came back clear. They've referred me for an ultrasound after examining it - he said it felt like a lymph node and that from feeling it there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I just keep jumping to the worst conclusions and thinking that I have lymphoma, because I've had really bad fatigue for the past few months. I had glandular fever in summer 2019, and I'm so scared that it could have caused lymphoma. So sorry for the ramble, I just don't know what else it could be apart from that.

  • What would be useful is a big table of everyone that had this and how many weeks it lasted for each of them. Especially those who it has gone for now.

Mine is definitely very slowly getting smaller. It was good to forget about it for a few days, otherwise you will constantly be touching it. It feels bigger when you put your neck in certain position... different if you touch it with your thumb or finger.

If you can just leave it and only check for size in the same position every few days.

  • I see what you mean about the thumb and finger! Working from home gives me too much time to keep playing with it. I'm about 12 weeks past my first jab and the original node is still swollen. ( I noticed it 4 days after my AZ vaccination) I think it's very slowly decreasing but definitely not growing. Interestingly after my second vaccination a second swollen node appeared close to the first one but that seems to have gone down. There do seem to be more and more people reporting this side effect!

  • The ultrasound operator I saw said that lymph nodes can stay up for months or even a year, and so that reassured me a bit, although I might worry a little if everyone's goes down apart from mine!
    xx

  • I think it might be wishful thinking that mine is going down. It's decreasing at a very slow rate if it is! That it can take that long is very reassuring though.

  • So I've just spoken to GP again as he said to call if still up. I can only feel it in certain positions so he's hopeful that's a sign it's starting to go down. He said he's not concerned at the moment as thinks it's a reactive lymph node to the vaccine but to call next week if still there and he will take bloods. He said they normally are only concerned if there 2-3 weeks. I don't think he grasps the fact people are having these for 7-8.

  • Try not to worry. Don't forget this is the biggest mass vaccination that's ever been done so all these side effects and how long they last are new for everyone... including doctors.

  • Hello, I am nearly 3 weeks post vaccine and mine has gone down considerably. I personally am trying my hardest to not touch it and it really helps but I know what it is like as you constantly want to check.  I have also found that warm water from the shower has helped too. Just so it gives some hope to people xx

  • Hi.

Thank you for sharing. I thought I would google as I woke the next morning with a sore collar bone and felt the lump and I feel much better now reading there are a few of us that have had swollen lymph nodes after the covid vaccine. I will still call my doctors on Monday to get it checked out as I'm in remission from breast cancer. But do not feel so anxious now. So thank you to all for sharing.

  • Hi everyone hope you are all ok.

3 weeks on Tue since noticed node & it might just be starting to reduce. It seems flatter & more mobile that it originally was. Fingers crossed. I have an option of a private ultrasound appt if it doesn't go as my health anxiety hates this...

From some research (& trying myself to deal in fact vs anxiety...) this should become more well known. Couple of things I have seen.

Neck/Collarbone lumps known in other vaccines eg. HPV.

Few studies seeing them & one I saw from Spain showed resolution 1-6 weeks with one still resolving at 6 weeks...

USA saying avoid mammograms for 6 weeks cos of lumps & bumps.

Seems to be an opinion that having had COVID makes glands swell more. I haven't but who knows might have been asymptomatic.

RNA vaccines (moderna & pfizer) thought to be more immunogenic than AZ and less well documented.

Keeping fingers crossed you all lump free asap.

  • Anyone else finds theirs goes up and down depending what you do? Do some exercise - back to how it was. 30 mins later you've been sitting down and you think it's gone right down.

It makes it hard to know if it's actually resolving or not. I have decided not to touch it at all for two weeks and see where I am after that.
