Unexplained lump above collarbone

Hi everyone,

I hope this post is okay, I'm not sure what's wrong with me and I don't want to offend those who have been diagnosed but I'm so anxious right now. I'm 20 years old, and I'm at university right now. About 4.5 weeks ago, I found a small lump above my collarbone on the left side. It feels about 1cm and is oval shaped, smooth and I can move it around easily. I noticed it the day after I had a flu jab so just thought it as an effect of that. It hadn't gone away in a week so I phoned the GP and they agreed to phone in three weeks. Three weeks later and it was still there, they ordered some bloods which all came back clear. They've referred me for an ultrasound after examining it - he said it felt like a lymph node and that from feeling it there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I just keep jumping to the worst conclusions and thinking that I have lymphoma, because I've had really bad fatigue for the past few months. I had glandular fever in summer 2019, and I'm so scared that it could have caused lymphoma. So sorry for the ramble, I just don't know what else it could be apart from that.

  • Fantastic news. So pleased for you.

I think quite a few people, including myself are experiencing this side effect and it varies in time with each person how quickly it goes back to normal. With me it took 5 weeks nearly.

I will be reporting mine to the Yellow card scheme today so that they have a clear picture how many people this affects.

    Best regards

  • Hello Everyone

I am so relieved to find this post. Firstly I hope you are all ok? It seems as though there are quite a lot of us feeling the same.

I have my first AZ vaccine on Sunday 25 April. Felt fine and then in the night had the shivers etc. On Tuesday I felt a smooth moveable lump on the left collarbone, just above it but moves on to it? About a centimetre with smooth edges. I think it was a but painful but not really now, although I am always checking it and I reckon I need to stop that! It is the same side as where I had my vaccine.

I called the GP practice who in turn got the doctor to call me.  I was so anxious and worried and just wanted reassurance. He said to me there was no point in me seeing him as he would just be telling me what I already knew and that there is a lump. I felt so upset and said surely anyone who finds a lump at least has the right for a doc to see it, even if they are unsure. He said he would only do investigations if it was there still in a week or so.

I was really upset as I thought we are always told to get lumps checked and if the GP had that attitude then it would stop already anxious people getting checked.

I have since seen a doctor who didn't seem worried at all and thinks it is the vaccine but has offered me an ultrasound scan in any case to back up what he thinks. I have this on 01 June.

sometimes I feel it and I think it has gone down and other times it hasn't (think wishful thinking!).

I am a natural born worrier but this post has put my mind at ease and also I know of a couple of people who have had the same and their lumps have gone.

Sending beat wishes to you all.

I have also put a note into the GP practice to ask if that is their position when patients phone up with a lump that we just have to 'see how it goes' in the first instance. I still do not know what mine is yet and I am really anxious but this post has helped and it coincides with my AZ vaccine but I feel like a nuisance with how the GP practice was at first.

If anything, I hope my note to the GP let's them think about how the patient feels before dismissing it.

  • Hi - I also have this.

Moderna vaccine 8 days ago,2-3 days after that found a small lump 2-3cm above collarbone that I'd describe like a small kidney bean under skin. It moves a little. Same side. Arm itself was really sore for a week. I had chills & a sore chest for about 48hrs after the vaccine, sort of like onset of a chest cold that never happened.

What is the consensus on here about how long to leave this before going to docs? I looked online & seems to say 2-3 weeks, but there are people on here at 5 weeks. I did an online consult with a Doc who wasn't concerned in the slightest & said leave for a couple of months!!

  • Hello

I called the docs the day I found it as I didn't even think it could be vaccine related. I was always under the impression that any lump should be checked but my GP didn't even want to see and said he would only look after a few weeks but I was so upset as I didn't know what it could be.

I am going for an ultrasound but that is on 01 June. The doctor said it is for peace of mind.

  • I get the feeling that the more well documented this probable vaccine reaction becomes, the less concern there is from the GPs. A blood test can be done really quickly and easily though, for some initial reassurance.

It can take two or three weeks for the ultrasound appointment to come through, after being told to wait for x number of weeks to see if the lump goes down on its own. Mine will be: one week from the vaccination before I saw a GP (I was really scared when I found it, having had breast cancer), 3 weeks waiting (with instructions not to keep prodding it!) before the second appointment, then another 3 weeks until the ultrasound in just over a week from now so 7 weeks in total. Scrolling through, it looks as if those on this chat who have had the ultrasound have been given the 'benign' verdict, which is so good to hear.

  • I had my second AZ jab last Sunday and another node popped up a few days later next to the original one on my collarbone . The first one is still palpable but much smaller now so I'm waiting to see what happens with this one! I'm sort of reassured that it appeared after my second vaccination - and convinced that they must be connected. I have had clear blood tests so am giving the second one time to resolve - seems they take a lot longer than the medical profession expected and I'm sure we are just a small sample of the people who have had this side effect. I did mention it to the nurse who vaccinated me and she said not to worry as it's a fairly common occurrence. Hopefully it will work out well for everyone but definitely scary at the time.

  • That's interesting. I can definitely feel one on each collarbone now, same place, 6 weeks after the first jab. Thankfully my blood test was clear, too. We'll all be interested to find out what happens after jab no. 2. Thanks for being the pioneer and also the first person to reassure me a lot via this chat.

  • Thank you - I always find your posts so positive too. It's just good to know that you are not alone with your worries. I'm still having problems not leaving the nodes alone though!! Hopefully it will be a positive outcome for everyone who has posted here.

  • Hi NUFC

I had my node come up on my right arm side where I had the jab 4 days later. I was alarmed at first bit then did some reading and joined this forum. From all the reading I did and experiences I read about the swellings seemed to last between a few days and up to six weeks.

I decided to watch and wait for a few weeks to see what happened and basically my node was initially quite large, and it even felt like there were several but by last Monday which was four weeks since it came up it felt tiny and now, exactly 5 weeks after it came up I can not feel it.

I read that in the U. S quite a few people are getting these collarbone  and armpit nodes coming up quite a bit following the Moderna jab (I had the Oxford AZ here in the UK) and women are being advised to go for routine breast screening before the jab or to wait around 6 weeks before they go for it as the vaccines are causing the swollen nodes thst are, showing up on mammograms and causing alarm.

Always worth consulting a doctor if you are worried though. It's up to the individual.

I am thinking of having my second jab in the other arm and I'll see if it happens again on that side this time. I'm not keen on having it in my right arm again as I still have some stiffness in the upper arm muscle five weeks later!! My neighbour and a friend have the same.

Another friend of mine who us a nurse had painful lymph nodes come up under her arm  whiclastrd about a week so it does seem to be a fairly common reaction. The body's immune system kicking in. Doesn't happen in every person but obviously quite a few due to mass vaccination. Another friend told me she has this collarbone reaction after every annual flu shot.

Keep us posted how you get on.

    Best regards

  • I had to stop myself prodding my node as I was making it a bit sore and, when I turned my head I got a funny sensation like I'd trapped a muscle. It was definitely because I'd been prodding around too much like you do

Once I stopped it got better. My node gradually reduced as time went on as I have been noticing people saying. I guess when they go up so big it is going to take a while for them to come down again. Mine was quite big initially and actually there seemed to be  two. Quite worrying at the time.

How are you getting on now?

    Best regards
