Unexplained lump above collarbone

Hi everyone,

I hope this post is okay, I'm not sure what's wrong with me and I don't want to offend those who have been diagnosed but I'm so anxious right now. I'm 20 years old, and I'm at university right now. About 4.5 weeks ago, I found a small lump above my collarbone on the left side. It feels about 1cm and is oval shaped, smooth and I can move it around easily. I noticed it the day after I had a flu jab so just thought it as an effect of that. It hadn't gone away in a week so I phoned the GP and they agreed to phone in three weeks. Three weeks later and it was still there, they ordered some bloods which all came back clear. They've referred me for an ultrasound after examining it - he said it felt like a lymph node and that from feeling it there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I just keep jumping to the worst conclusions and thinking that I have lymphoma, because I've had really bad fatigue for the past few months. I had glandular fever in summer 2019, and I'm so scared that it could have caused lymphoma. So sorry for the ramble, I just don't know what else it could be apart from that.

  • Exactly the same here!

I have just received a letter with my ultrasound date of  the afternoon of 10th May, clashing with both my optician's appointment and my mother's dental appointment I was going to drive her to, but never mind!

The good news (I hope) is that ultrasound results are almost instantaneous. Do you have an ultrasound appointment yet?

    All the best xx

  • Hi

Glad you got your appointment, I haven't yet but wasn't referred til either late Friday after seeing the GP or Monday so not expecting it yet, I'm thinking of going for a private scan even if it's just reassurance but not sure

    xx

  • Let me know how you get on ....
    xx

  • Hi

My scan has come through as a soft tissue ultrasound on 12th May, not sure whether to keep private one for Saturday now.

  • You won't need two ultrasound scans, but it depends how worried you are ... can you wait until 12th May? Some of us have had the swollen lymph nodes for quite a few weeks, with no problem coming up on blood tests. Hope it will all be fine, whichever scan you attend xx

  • Hi

i think I would of been more relaxed if the second one on opposite side hadn't of come up

  • Hi everyone. I've been following this post with interest/anxiety but up till now I've been too worried to post myself. I wanted to share my story in case it helps anyone else who's looking for answers now or in the future.

I had my first Covid (AZ) vaccine on 22/1/21 and two months later at the end of March I noticed a smooth rubbery mass above my left collarbone (same side I had vaccine in). it's quite big, a few cms across and I have no idea how long it has been there. I went to GP immediately who didn't think it was a lymph node and thought it was a lipoma. He arranged an ultrasound which isn't till 10 May. In the meantime I booked via private GP (who was very concerned) to see a private specialist (a Haemato-Oncologist) who was also very concerned. He told me I had a 'conglomerate of rubbery lymph nodes that were abnormal' and required urgent ultrasound/biopsy. Said he suspected lymphoma (he seemed more convinced of this as my Dad died of leukemia aged 66 not too long ago and he thought it could be related). I had not been too concerned before this as I found out about the Covid vaccine link and the pictures from the Spanish study look exactly the same as my lump. However, he said this would be the very last differential diagnosis on his list although he did acknowledge it's a common side effect. (For what it's worth I since had my second vaccine on the other side just so I could differentiate symptoms. Nothing has appeared there).

I had the ultrasound today and the Dr who did it said it is definitely not lymph nodes and that she thinks it's a lipoma or some muscle. But nothing sinister and either way she was sure it was benign. Not lymphoma and not lymph nodes though. Sending me for MRI anyway so they can be sure what it is but not at all concerned. So I just wanted to reassure anyone that's worried that even if a specialist thinks it's worrying, a supraclavicular mass doesn't always have a bad outcome! I had some bloods done as well and haven't received results yet but did hear that the Dr would phone me if anything alarming came up.

In the end my lump was probably not linked to Covid vaccine but I will post again after MRI in case anyone wants to know the final outcome/what they decide it is.

I hope everyone gets good news soon and that the time passes quickly till your ultrasound scans. I know how worrying the waiting is.

    All the best.

  • I posted a few weeks ago about my swollen collarbone lymph node which appeared 4 days after the AZ jab on the same side. I had the jab on the 25th of March and the node enlarged on the 29th. It was initially quite big but as the weeks went by it gradually got smaller. Monday last was exactly a month since it appeared and it had gone down significantly by then and today I can hardly feel it at all. I'm now convinced it was the jab.

I went on a covid jab side effects group on fb from the states and alot of people are discussing this. It appears to be happening quite a bit as so many people are being vaccinated. It showed up in the trials too.

I decided to monitor mine for a few weeks  which doctors were advising people to do in the States and if it didn't go away then go to the docs.

My friend said it always happens to her after the flu jab and that it's her immune system kicking in strongly and thst it has happened when she's had the flu too.

I had to stop myself prodding it as it could make it uncomfortable.

I hope it doesn't happen with the next jab. I intend having it in my other arm and I'll see if it happens on the other side and also my arm muscle is still a tiny bit tender 5 weeks after having the jab. Has anyone else had that? Both a friend and a neighbour still have painful upper arm muscles. One had the jab in Feb!!

    Regards

    Lxx

  • Hi

so I went for the private ultrasound today and it was hard to find the lymph nodes when laying down but he went along both sides of the collarbone found 1 on one side was 6mm and the other side was 4mm

he said they are normal reactive lymph nodes and should disappear in time and nothing worrying about them

so I am so relieved x

  • Ah, that's such brilliant news. It has brightened my day!
