Unexplained lump above collarbone

Hi everyone,

I hope this post is okay, I'm not sure what's wrong with me and I don't want to offend those who have been diagnosed but I'm so anxious right now. I'm 20 years old, and I'm at university right now. About 4.5 weeks ago, I found a small lump above my collarbone on the left side. It feels about 1cm and is oval shaped, smooth and I can move it around easily. I noticed it the day after I had a flu jab so just thought it as an effect of that. It hadn't gone away in a week so I phoned the GP and they agreed to phone in three weeks. Three weeks later and it was still there, they ordered some bloods which all came back clear. They've referred me for an ultrasound after examining it - he said it felt like a lymph node and that from feeling it there shouldn't be anything to worry about. I just keep jumping to the worst conclusions and thinking that I have lymphoma, because I've had really bad fatigue for the past few months. I had glandular fever in summer 2019, and I'm so scared that it could have caused lymphoma. So sorry for the ramble, I just don't know what else it could be apart from that.

  • Hi,

Tagging onto this coversation, almost releived to hear other people going through the same thing.

I had my covid vaccine (nhs radiographer) but a week or so after I found a small lump above my collarbone, it wss painless and I only found it because I poke around alot (the job makes me worry more than it should). Anyway i spoke to my gp and she called me in and had a feel and did a full blood count, testing inflammatory markers and all sorts. I even asked a consultant I work with to check it. ANYWAY  All came back perfectly normal, which is supposed to be a releif but its still there and getting alot of random bursts of  pain in my neck and collarbone.

The dreaded C word wont leave my brain, the doctor is worried at all. Is it normal for to have lumps? Has anyone had lumps that havent turned out to be ahnormal.

I work in cancer care so I know lumps and bumps arent normal...

Thank you to anyone who reads this.

    Xxx

  • Hi

I haven't made an appointment yet - over the past few days my node seems to be reducing in size. I shouldn't really put it off any longer though, especially after reading your post. Was your swollen node on the same side as the vaccination?  I do hope your ultrasound goes ok and you don't have to wait too long - waiting is always the scariest part. I have routine blood tests coming up soon so that will be a good chance to discuss with my gp if it hasn't resolved by then. Do let us know how you get on.

  • Yes it is on my left side and I had my left arm jabbed both times. Fingers crossed this is all it is. It is horrible to think I might be back in the same place I was in 13 years ago. Please get yours checked out, it reducing in size sounds good though x

  • Hello again,

Sorry for the delayed reply. I have been taking Anastrozole since treatment, too. For a while my joints were really stiff, so that I found it hard to walk after sitting in a car, for instance, and had to start off hobbling to get them warmed up, and my fingeres were stiff. That wore off. I have had a few problems sleeping and I still get muscle aches that I have been blaming on other things, and hot flushes, but otherwise the Anastrozole doesn't seem to have had bad effects. I walk the dog in the countryside every day, which is my version of running, and sometimes have a game of tennis.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who really panicked when they found the node. Today the node is still there and the glands under my chin are slightly sore. Might be unconnected?

  • So glad to hear the node is reducing in size. That sounds really promising.

  • Hello,

This is my first post, I've been trying to find some answers on this area so am a bit relieved to find this thread. I had my Pfizer vaccine 4 weeks ago and I too have a lump just above the collar bone, the doctor is sending me for blood tests to check for lymphoma which has sent me into a bit of worry! I have also been warm overnight, I don't know if it qualifies as night sweats but I've been sweating at night. The weather is warmer though so I don't know if I'm just too warm, but this combined with the lump is where the worry is. I'm almost 39, and had been wondering if I was perimenopausal but it feels a tad early.

I am hoping that the swollen lymph node above my collar bone is vaccine related, I'm seeing things about six weeks to go down etc now, so perhaps the doctor has jumped the gun a little? I have 3 children, 2 of which are under 5, so I'm feeling quite anxious. I won't know for another week!

Sending positive vibes to everyone's way here, I wonder if there will be a link to the vaccine for this sort of thing.

edited to add - it's my left side, the same side my as second vaccine four weeks ago

  • Sorry if I missed the original post on this, but are you saying you still have nodes 6 weeks after covid vaccine? xx

  • Hi

I'm another one with a swollen node above my collarbone which I first noticed 4 days after my AZ jab on the same side. It's still swollen 7 weeks later but definitely moveable and maybe a little smaller ( or is that wishful thinking?). I haven't contacted my gp yet but will if it doesn't resolve soon. I also read that some nodes take ages to go down. There seem to be lots of us in the same boat - just hoping it is vaccine related. There are also some similar posts I read on a more recent thread relating the same side effect. As you say positive vibes to everyone.

  • Interesting. Have you reported it on the yellow card website? I reported mine today, as it is for suspected side-effects, so you don't have to know that it was the vaccine.....

  • Jal55 I'm such an anxious person, I just want to know the blood test results now, I admire your calmness and patience!

  • Meg357 you are the sensible one - I get equally anxious but tend to put off doing anything about it!!

Hope your blood test results come quickly - waiting for results is so stressful.

    Take care

  • Had GP appointment 1/4/21 because of a lump I found above my collar bone (day after 2nd pfzier vaccine). They said its a swollen right sided supraclavicular lymph node but wanted me to try antibiotics and have bloods done before sending me for a scan. Got home and rang for bloods appointment but couldn't get me in for 2 weeks. then had a voicemail from gp asking me to go back for further examination with her and another gp. They did bloods, breast, tummy and rectal examination and they referring me for a chest xray and ultra sound scans.  My bloods have come back normal apart from a folate deficiency for which I am now taking folic acid. I received a letter yesterday to make an appointment for an ultrasound which I am hoping will be this coming week. I have lost 2 stone in 12 month which I had put down to less meals out, less alcohol and regular meal times. I have now started to get mild pain in what I think might be chest wall pain, which also goes through to my shoulder and mild ache in my neck.

I dont know if this is just paranoia and anxiety, but I am really worried. I haven't spoken to my other half about the symptoms because as a nurse is also quite worried for me.

  • Hi

It is really worrying isn't it - we all seem to be in the same boat. Some gps seem to advocate a wait and see approach whereas others are more proactive. Did your gp suggest it could be related to the vaccine? It seems coincidental that most of the people who have posted have had a vaccine recently and on the same side as the swollen node.
Hope you get your ultrasound quickly. The anxiety is horrible though.

  • Hi Melanijo26,

I had a look at the reported cases of lymphadenopathy on the yellow card system processed so far, and it's around 2.5 thousand for the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine (which I had), and over 3,000 for the Pfizer vaccine, and they are probably still looking at reports coming in. Supraclavicular lymph node swelling is reported from the US as well as armpit lymph node swelling. It does seem to be happening to us after the vaccine, so fingers tightly crossed that you and the rest of us are all OK and just having a mild reaction. Your blood test results sound reassuring. Hope the other pain is a red herring.
Doesn't work the whole time, but I've found it's best to try and keep busy/active – I like the outdoors and nature, cooking, trying to do a crossword, playing a game with someone, or reading a book – concentrate on what's going on around you rather than inside you, breathe slowly, do some stretches and go out walking in the sunshine. This passes the time and helps you feel less panicky. All the best.

  • That sounds like sensible advice. I was feeling really wobbly this morning, went for a run and now doing battle with a fig tree that I am trying to repot. It helped no end. I looked at the yellow card reports too - and that must be a fraction of the cases!
     Take care

  • I thought I would post an update on my situation, which may be of help.

im now over 5 weeks since my 2nd Pfizer vaccine and still have a visible swollen lymph node above the left collar bone - same side as the vaccine. I had bloods taken yesterday at the doctor after I reported it last week.

I had a call from a receptionist at my doctors surgery today saying my 2 initial bloods have come back as normal. I believe they were the cancer indicators screening and a thyroid check, I think my blood film is still to come back. The doctor himself will call Tuesday so I can get more info from him as the receptionist couldn't give any detail, but certainly so far things are looking reassuring.

Im impressed at the speed of things with the surgery! Hope this helps reassure some folk though.

  • Good luck for your phone call with the doctor tomorrow x

  • Hi all

i had my AZ jab on sunday on left arm and for a couple of days have felt a small pea sized lump or nodule above my left collarbone. Its a bit sore but I can't tell if thatts me prodding it! At first I thought it was a collarbone problem but then found this lump. Even though my research indicates it's probably an effect of the jab, am still concerned as I had thyroid cancer in 2012, so will give it a couple of weeks but then go and see the GP. Good luck to everyone else, will be interested in the outcome of your enquiries too. Thanks

  • Hello all. An update from me. So, I had my first jab end January and second jab beginning April. At the start of March I noticed an enlarged lymph node on the left side by my collar bone. I googled 'enlarged lymph node' and saw to wait a few weeks to see if it went down by itself (luckily I didn't Google the specific lymph node at the time as that is quite an alarming Google search). On the morning of second jab, I was on the NHS app to get my NHS number and remembered it had been a month since I noticed the enlarged lymph node so I did an online consultation form with my GP. The GP phoned the next day and invited me in the same day which alarmed me a little. The GP examined my neck/collar bone/pelvic area and asked me lots of questions and referred me for an ultrasound saying it is most likely an underlying infection as no other symptoms. The GP did not ask if I had had the covid vaccineI and I didn't known to mention it myself at that point. I am in my 30s so the GP may not have thought about the Covid vaccine as an issue I suppose, but I had it through my job. I don't know anyone my age who has had it yet apart from if for their employment. I have had cancer before so cancer was my main concern, especially as I was told if it ever came back, it would be in my lymph nodes. I came home from the GP appointment and did more googling, learning about the significance of it being the left supraclavicalur lymph node, so have spent 2 weeks being super worried. I also learnt on here about the possibility of it being linked to the covid vaccine and read some articles in medical journals about that.

I had my ultrasound today, of my neck/jaw/under my chin/near my ears - it was more thorough than I expected. The Dr showed me the screen and said the lymph node is enlarged but no signs of malignancy as the narrower measurement was less than 10mm, there were these white edge parts that are a sort of fat that wouldn't be there if it was cancer, and the "architecture" of the lymph node looked normal, with clearly defined edges. He said there was another enlarged one next to the one I had identified, I had not felt that one. I asked him if it might be enlarged due to the covid vaccine and he said this was possible and it shows the body has produced an immune response which is a good thing. He referred to another woman who had a large lymph node swelling in her neck, thought to be from the vaccine. I heard him dictate the letter to my GP whilst I was getting dressed and he said there were no signs of malignancy and the lymph node enlargement is "possibly linked to the covid vaccine".

So hopefully the GP will be satisfied and life can go back to normal for me.

I hope you are all getting on okay and have an equally positive outcome.

  • What good news SR, thank you for sharing. I wonder if they will begin linking the vaccine to these node swellings soon.

Well my doctor had me back in, bloods all show as normal which is good news. I'm being referred for an ultrasound next, I'm now 6 weeks since my second vaccine, and finding this lump. Hopefully the ultrasound also shows normal results. If this is to do with the vaccine I wonder just how long it will take for the node to reduce again!
