  • Hi Louise.

This page gives useful information the 7 point scale GPs use to assess moles: https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/melanoma/getting-diagnosed/referral-specialist

The page mentions that it can be difficult for GPs to assess whether a change to a mole is cancer so there is a tendency to refer on the basis of better safe than sorry.  This is backed up the information leaflet published by UHB (University Hospital Birmingham) which says that 7 out of 10 suspected skin cancer referrals turn out not to be cancer.  (click here)

In fact, when it comes to urgent referrals for suspected cancer or any type, most people who get a referral turn out NOT to have cancer at all, with figures ranging from 70%-90% of those referred getting the all clear.

So, of course you're going to be worried - that is only natural.  But do not assume that having cancer is a done deal at this point in the game.  The odds are in your favour that it won't be cancer.
